PM’s relative for WB post: SC takes suo motu notice
ISLAMABAD, Dec 17: The Supreme Court took notice on Monday of the nomination of a son-in-law of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf as the country’s representative in the World Bank.
The suo motu notice was taken after publication of reports in the press. A three-judge bench, headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, has been constituted to take up the matter on Wednesday.
The prime minister nominated his son-in-law, Raja Azeemul Haq, to the World Bank post by using his discretionary powers. He approved the summary for his appointment as executive director despite opposition by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh who tried, in vain, to persuade Raja Pervez to reverse his decision. The finance minister was of the opinion that Mr Haq did not have the required seniority for such an important position.—PPI
