NAGPUR: Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar on Monday said it is time the selectors look to the future and replace Mahendra Singh Dhoni with young Virat Kohli as captain of the Indian side which lost the four-Test series 2-1 to England.

“Until the fourth day of this Test I said there is no alternative to Dhoni, but now that Virat (Kohli) has come up with a 100 under trying circumstances I think he has discovered a good part about himself. I think he is ready to take on the mantle,” the former India skipper said.

He criticised the Indian team for the humiliating defeat in the series and Dhoni’s name came up for special mention for his ordinary and unaggressive captaincy.

“If India were looking for a win here they should have shown the intent by declaring at the overnight score. I feel Dhoni and his men looked clearly out of sorts in the series. England batted exceedingly well but our bowlers were ineffective and our batters didn’t do as much as they were expected to do. It was a team failure,” he said.

The cricketer-turned-commentator also said that it is time Sachin Tendulkar should make a decision on his career as he felt the senior batsman was no longer enjoying his time on the field.—Agencies

COMMENTS

  1. Kohli is not a choice but Ghambir is having skills

  2. i would rather make gambhir the skipper, kohli got still a long way to go i dont blame dhoni, india do not have bowlers who can take 20 wickets to win a test match instead replacing dhoni the bcci should replace the selector’s

  3. Kohli is not a suitable candidate because his antics and behavior suggest that he has not yet grown out of the infancy. Dhoni still is the best candidate, he just need to put more heart and soul in test cricket just like he did in the last test.

  4. Only IPL , , why T20 … ?

  5. Suddenly we are seeing the Mumbaikars and avid Thakre supporters shielding that inept No4 Indian batsman from the chop by shifting all the blame to Dhoni. First it was Jimmy Amarnath, then some bloggers in a prominent mumbai newspaper and now Gavaskar. They are finding a scapegoat but there is enough evidence to show that Sehwag and Tendulkar should first get the boot. ST has averaged a paltry 20 from 21 innings which has brought his palying average from 58 to 52 abd yet they want to get rid of Dhoni who has better figures to show. The main reason why they are after Dhoni is because he will be the only person with the guts to get rid of the two mentioned above. As you will know regionalism is playing a part in this post mortem of India’s dismal failure. Amarnathe for the Delhites 0wants Sehwag to be captain) and now SG trying to save the Mumbai citadel. It seems that anyone dares go against the Rajya Sabha MP and known Thakre supporter will not get a cricketing job.

  6. India should quit playing test cricket and concentrate on T20
