Cricket: Clash of the rivals
Cricket viewers around the world look forward to this spectacle as it happens not too often. It is one of the most watched cricketing events today — the whole world watches when India and Pakistan square off in a cricket series.
The two cricketing giants are scheduled to play in two T20 matches and three One-Day matches in India. The action starts from December 25, with a T20 match.
We had a chance to catch up with everybody’s favourite cricketer Mr Doom Doom, and we asked him about his opinion on the upcoming series and the Pakistan’s chances of winning it. Here are the extracts of the interview:
Q: You have been criticised by your performances in the last T20 World Cup. How would you respond to that?
Mr Doom Doom: First of all, all thanks to Almighty, the Beneficent and Merciful. Yes, I have had a number of bad games. But Insha Allah, I will bounce back like I always have in my career. To achieve this aim, I have cancelled my contract in Australian big bash league; and have decided to play in the domestic T20 championship.
Q: How would you rate Pakistan’s chances in the upcoming series with India?
Mr Doom Doom: It is always tough playing against India, especially in India. But we have experience in handling the situation and we know how to beat them. The boys will be confident of beating them and Insha Allah we will do well in the series.
Q: It has been said that the most important deciding factor in the outcome of Pakistan-India cricket series is the ability of the cricketing side to handle pressure. How do you think the two sides will handle pressure?
Mr Doom Doom: The real pressure would be on India as they would be playing in home conditions, in front of their home crowd, knowing that they are required to meet the expectations of over a billion people. Hence, all things considered, the real pressure will be on them. In matches like these, it is important to focus on your performance and also enjoy the game. Otherwise the pressure of the game is too much to handle.
Q: India has had the better of Pakistan in the last couple of matches in the subcontinent conditions. India won on both occasions when the two sides met in the last One-Day game, which was also the semi-final of the World Cup, and also in the last T20 match played between them in the recent T20 World Cup. So do you think, history will favour India and this trend will continue?
Mr Doom Doom: Look, history does not matter in these kinds of matches. It is the team which performs better on the day and handles the pressure well that comes out on top in the match. Once again, I would say that I am quite sure that the boys would do well in the series and would do the people of our country proud.
Q: What kind of pitches do you expect to be prepared for the matches of the series?
Mr Doom Doom: The pitches would be generally batting paradises and matches would be high scoring ones. Some pitches like that in Calcutta would be on the slower side. But we are well-equipped to handle any side of track that is prepared for a match.
Q: Pakistan’s batting continues to be an area of concern in the One-Day matches as we have seen in the last One-Day series against Australia. Do you think more young players needed to be given chances as batsmen for this series?
Mr Doom Doom: It is not my job to select the side and I won’t comment on the selectors’ choice. But you need experienced players for a series of this magnitude. I do not think the current batsmen in the squad are bad. It is just a matter of applying oneself in the match and I am confident that they would do so and perform well in the series.
So there you have it, our favourite star Mr Doom Doom’s views about this series that is sure to keep us glued to the TV screens for the next few days. And thank goodness the schools are off and we can enjoy watching these two archrivals battle it out in the field.
Let us hope that our cricket team makes us proud and wins both the T20 and One-Day series. Our team is full of talented players. If they perform to their full potential on a match day, then they are capable of beating any side.
