TAXILA, Dec 24: The custom authorities foiled a bid to smuggle five truckloads of electronic goods and weapons, worth millions of rupees, custom officials informed.

Acting on a tip off, custom officials tried stopping a convoy of trucks on GT road, near Taxila but truck drivers instead of stopping, tried fleeing. As a result, a chase ensued.

The truck drivers opened indiscriminate fire but custom officials undeterred, retaliated, aiming at the tyres of the truck, which eventually burst and brought the trucks to a halt.

Later a search was conducted and smuggled goods worth millions were recovered. Custom authorities arrested five smugglers, while five managed to escape.

In another incident, officials of Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) on the Islamabad- Peshawar motorway (M-1) foiled a bid to smuggle 44 kilogrammes (kg) of hashish and arrested one drug smuggler.

ANF officials said that acting on a tip off, a team of ANF stopped an Islamabad bound car on the Islamabad- Peshawar motorway (M-1) at Burhan interchange, near Hassanabdal.

During the search operation 44 kgs of hashish was found hidden inside the car. A case has been registered against the accused.
