Turkish TV soaps
THESE days there is much hue and cry against the airing of Turkish dramas on a private TV channel. Actors from across the country to people in parliament were seen and heard speaking against the foreign content.
All were advocating that there must be a code of conduct imposed by Pemra against airing foreign content on the national media. They were arguing that Turkish play will spoil the youth as these are not in sync with our culture and traditions and so on.
These are all clumsy arguments. There are Indian dramas also being aired on private TV channels. Even news bulletins run the clips of Indian actors dancing to movies and songs. Besides, some Indian actor dies and all our channels have special programmes on them in prime time. Some Indian actress turns 21 years old and news channels telecast her clips.
If such content is not objectionable, why should the Turkish dramas be such then?

exactly this hue and cry is ‘cos the Indian sponsors are going berserk on the newfound competition which is far more powerful and appealing in content and character than just the gold glitter of Indianized soaps and entertainment.
you are absolutely right Zaman. they are all Hypocrites with a capital H.
very well said.
YES, But we have to start from somewhere whether turkish dramas or indian dramas. Lets Start with Turkish Dramas And then deal with Indian dramas.
Why making this hoopla. it should be up to the audience what channel they want to see. It is on cable. People can watch any thing these days either on cable or even on internet. It is unto people to make the right choices. Who are we to impose? Besides we may learn some thing from different cultures. World is indeed a global village
I thought that Turkey was what Pakistan’s democracy wants to emulate.
Instead of banning Turkish drama, why not to produce quality PK dramas that people wont watch any foreign channel.
dear all, something known as the internet has been invented whereby content worldwide is available for whosever wishes to access it anyway even if television cannot provide it. If people in Pakistan want foreign contentm then let them have it. We seriously need to grow up as a nation and think positively.
Yes you are right …. Indian content should be banned too. But the thing is that all the efforts of waking up PEMRA till now have been failed.
Pakistanis love to see Indian contents then why Turkish content should be banned?
Because of Culture. Pakistan has more in common with India then any other country.
What exactly is that? They are brown and speak a similar language but the cultural difference between Pakistan and India is greater than Pakistan and Turkey. By culture I mean taste in food, attidude to dress, family structure, outlook in life, morality. For example most Indians would find eating meat repulsive, would find marrying a cousin (even 2nd, 3rd cousins) repulsive. They have a deep and sincere connection to the caste system and not to put too fine a point on it, have religious views that are completely at odds with Pakistan’s. That said, Indian and Turkish dramas both have value in educating people about how other people live.
