KARACHI: At least five people were injured on Wednesday when a bomb apparently fitted in a motorcycle exploded outside a mosque in Sohrab Goth area of Karachi, Pakistan’s commercial capital, police said.

According to reports, the powerful blast, which could be heard from afar, triggered an episode of intense firing in Haji Jannat Gul town area located near Sohrab Goth’s Al-Asif Square.

Five people were injured in the explosion and were moved to a nearby private hospital.

A loud contingent of police and Rangers cordoned off the area and the bomb disposal squad was called to the scene of the blast.

The blast came as the city was partially shut down Wednesday, which had been announced as a day of mourning by the religious Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), believed to be a reincarnation of the banned militant outfit of Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan, over an attack on one their central leaders and the killing of four of their men the previous day.

Violence erupted in different parts of the city Tuesday claiming a total of sixteen lives after gunmen opened fire on a car carrying Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui, who was hit in the leg by a bullet.

Four other people were reported to have been injured in different incidents of aerial firing and ransacking of public and private properties on Wednesday.
