KARACHI: Pakistan defeated India 5-4 in an exciting Asian Hockey Champions Trophy final at the Al Rayyan Stadium in Doha, Qatar on Thursday to clinch the gold medal.

It was a close match, marred by controversy in the final few minutes, with India walking off the field in protest against a penalty corner that was not given. They came back on with two minutes left in the match as Pakistan held on to secure the win.

Shafqat Rasool scored one while Mohammad Waqas and captain Mohammad Imran scored two goals apiece.

The Greenshirts opened the scoring in the seventh minute through a penalty corner scored by Waqas, but India equalised within two minutes through SV Sunil.

Raghunath then gave his side the lead in the 21st minute as India went into half-time 2-1 up.

In the second-half, the tempo of the game was much faster with both teams creating chances and Rasool soon gave Pakistan the equaliser in the 42nd minute.

Imran’s goal gave Pakistan the lead again but India pulled one back through Gurvinder Chandi to make the score 3-3. However, Waqas soon restored Pakistan’s lead in the 57th minute but Rupinderpal Singh scored yet another equaliser for the men in blue.

Pakistan were awarded a penalty corner in the 64th minute which led to Imran scoring the winning goal.

The tournament comprised six top teams from Asia – Pakistan, China, India, Oman, Malaysia and Japan.

Pakistan thrashed Oman in their opening match 8-3, followed by a 5-2 win over China, a 3-3 draw against Malaysia and lost 2-1 to India who they had beaten to clinch the bronze medal at the Champions Trophy earlier this month in Melbourne, Australia. Pakistan brushed aside Japan 5-2 in the final pool match to set up a clash with India.

Meanwhile, Malaysia clinched the bronze medal after beating China 3-1.

  3. Great Game!

I was there….wonderfully fast and competetive …Pak crowd outnumbered the Indians by 3-1!

Indian’s were very bad at losing….

  4. Has anyone come across the Match Highlights of this Match? Ahhh I love Hockey so much and so many sports channels couldn’t air such a important match – What a Pitty.

  5. Its not India or Pakistan its a game… play like champions and give best of your quality and accept what ever the result.

  6. Indians are not true sportsmen, They have very bad habit of walking off the ground when they are losing which is a total disgrace to their whole country… A month back indian Kabaadi team walked off during Asian Kabaadi championship final and Pakistan won that and today they walked off during an other final of Hockey championship. They are disgrace to most game…better not play with them. Congratulation to Pakistan!!

  7. Very good game of hockey. Great to see Asian giants in the final playing Asian style of hockey, attacking and creating chances. Hats off. Pakistan Zindabad. India-Pakistan friendly rivalry zindabad !

  10. I would say Pakistan played well to came back from 2-1. It is a great win and i think indian freinds should accept the defeat. It is a sports , may be tomorrow they can win as well

  11. congratulations Pakistan team very good to see Hockey players are producing some thing for the nation and India must have shown some sportsmen spirit. Good luck Pakistan we are proud of you even if you lose or win

  12. Another false dawn?

  13. I wish I had watched this game. What I understand from different sources, it was a thrilling contest, both sides played well. India should accept defeat gracefully. Look at the bright side , revival of hockey in both countries is a good possibility.

  14. Sports should be taken as sports. Why would India walk off the field and couple of days earlier Ishant Sharma behaved in an unsporting way. Indians yet have to learn how to behave in a civil manner.

    • Pakistanis are last persons on this earth to preach civility. How do you know Ishant Sharma behaved in unsporting way and Akmal did not ? When did India walk off the field ?
Indian public had been dead against playing against Pakistan, it is just for Political reasons that his drama is being enacted. So distribute this wisdom to your own countrymen.

      • erm…this is a Pakistani paper…founded by Quaid-e-azam himself….
if you read the article the Indians left the field during the match in protest…
        read and ye shall learn.

    • Give them a break man. Their civilization is about 5000 years old. Older individuals, sometimes suffer dementia.

    • Right, and this from a country whose most famous sporting image is of their most beloved batsman trying to hit the bowler over the head with a cricket bat!

  15. Well done green shirts , keep it up

  16. Hoorayyyyyyyyyyyy! and well done Pakistan.

  17. It is good to see that these teams play hard in the sports field. Great!!! I would hate this fire across the borders. We do not need that. Sports and Music … trust me we are saving lot of lives … Cheers India and Pakistan. Kudos to both teams!!!

  18. Indians getting smashed by Pakistan both in Cricket & Hockey , Lolzzz . First the Champions Trophy and now Asian Trophy . Buck up Pakistan , we need good news more then the Indians right now as we have little to celebrate for.

    PAKISTAN ZINDABAD

  19. & the lesson we got is never think beyond india

  20. Very good game of hockey from both teams pakistan and india. Both played really well. However indians needs to learn to accept the defeat with open heart and walking out is not the solution. Indian team playing very good hockey and they do not need to do childish act

  21. Congradulations to Pakistan Hockey team for wining Asian Champions Trophy and defeating India. Its a great and glorious victory for Pakistan. Wonderful performance put up by Pakistan in a thrilling and exciting match.

  22. Pakistani Hockey Team: We r very pround of you, Pakistan Zinda-bad

  23. Proud our national heroes. By the grace of God proud to say that we are Asian hockey champions

  24. Indians taught a lesson.

    • ON HOW TO CHEAT???

    • and clearly you didn’t learn your lesson of humility!

    • what was the lesson, score was 5-4 , a close match

    • What lesson?

Do you know that India could have kept Pakistan out of the final?
If Pakistan had played Malayasia in similar situation, no one knows what Pakistan would have done.
Do you also know that India won the league encounter?
Watch the final closely, and you will see that India actually had many more near-goal misses.
Of course, it does not take away any credit from Pakistan.
They probably played their best hockey in the final.

Yes, India did not do the right thing by leaving the field. After all, it is just a hockey match.
It was probably one of the most memorable match of recent time.
I am glad Nobbs/management have shown good control over the players.
