LAHORE, Dec 26: Speakers at a seminar on Wednesday rejected child marriage as a social ill and called it an outcome of obsolete mores and feudalistic thinking. They added that Islam and the Constitution did not allow child marriage.

At a seminar organised by JAAG with the United Nations Taskforce for Young Women at a local hotel, a declamation competition on ‘Child Marriage’ was won by Laiba Sadiq of Sunshine School, Shadbagh. Rabia Hafeez of Crescent Grammar School, and Sidra bagged second and third positions. The three position holders received Rs25,000, Rs15,000 and Rs10,000.

Later, JAAG executive director Amir Riaz presented a review of pictures published in Punjab Textbook Board’s 2012 books and stated that the girls and women were being portrayed negatively.

I-SAPS executive director Dr Salman Humayun, Punjab Urban Resource Centre chairman Hafiz Rashid and South Asia Partnership director Muhammad Tahseen also spoke.
