KARACHI: The Sindh government on Monday evening imposed a ban on pillion-riding for three days besides making elaborate security arrangements for New Year’s Eve and the Chehlum of Imam Hussain, officials said.

“The Government of Sindh has under [Section] 144 [of] the CrPC [criminal procedure code] imposed a ban on pillion-riding on motorcycles/scooters in Karachi from sunset on December 31, 2012 till midnight January 3, 2013 to maintain law and order situation,” said a home department’s notification.

“The aforesaid ban shall not be applied on women, children below the age of 12 years, senior citizens, disabled persons, journalists, personnel of law-enforcement agencies in uniform and employees of essential services.”

It warned that violation of this order would be liable to action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

“The area SHOs, their subordinate Inspector/Sub-Inspector/ASI are authorised to take legal action against the violators in accordance with applicable laws,” it added.

The provincial government also banned display of arms and cancel permits of carrying arms in the city for the three days.
