Pakistanis achieved freedom more then 60Yrs. ago. They were free to educate themselves, study world history.Learn lessons and chart their own destiny.Unfortunately the Pakistanis failed to develop grass root institutions.Musharaf tried to empower them through reformation but ruling junta overthrew him.People went along with them.

It is time people learn to organize, and stop getting brainwashed, and feel free to think for themselves.

The author has summarized Daron Acemoglu very well, and deftly applied the model to Pakistani situation. Though, by no means perfect, the major change I have observed in India, over the past 30 years has been gradual realization that "ma baap ki sarkar" cannot deliver the results. As a result, the private sector has evolved despite the government. Realizing this, the economic liberalization instituted by the Central government in 1991, has further helped the inclusiveness. More democratization is the answer.

Dear Arif sahib, do you and a number of writers in dawn realise that most of us have a limited education. When you start writing columns with bombastic words or convoluted statements, it leaves us adrift, and we ignore them. Please you are not addressing the Harvard. Cambridge or the Oxford illumine. We are ordinary people.Ordinary people need simple English. No offence or otherwise meant.

Definitely a thought provoking read.
Countries like Pakistan whose institutions exist only to bleed the nation for the benefit of a few, possibly owe this to the flawed foundation erected at birth and the paucity of honest leadership that followed, progressively getting worse over time.
