KARACHI: Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) sealed second spot in the Pakistan Premier Football League (PPFL) here on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Wapda helping them edge Muslim FC on goal difference.
Meanwhile, champions Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Pakistan Navy who had their shot-stopper Shahzad to thank for an inspired performance in goal.
KESC knew they needed to win their last game of the season against Wapda at the KPT Stadium to take second place from Muslim FC and they started the game with purpose, scoring with only four minutes on the clock.
Abdul Salam was sent clear after a long punt from the back and he made no mistake in controlling the pass before slotting it past the Wapda goalkeeper.
Wapda threatened at times but a masterful performance by centre-back Aurangzaib Baba helped KESC keep them away as they ended the season on 62 points.
Shahzad made a number of crucial saves here at the PNS Karsaz Ground as Navy secured a point despite playing with 10 men for nearly two-thirds of the match.
Saadullah gave KRL the lead in the 24th minute before Navy lost Jabbar to a second bookable offence in the 35th. But they refused to lie down at their home stadium and scored the equaliser against the run of play through Adnan on the hour mark to move to seventh place on 37 points.
Monday’s fixtures: NBP v Afghan FC (Korangi Baloch Football Stadium, Karachi); KPT v Army (KPT Football Stadium, Karachi).—Sports Reporter
