KARACHI, Jan 23: An activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was gunned down in the old city area on Wednesday morning, police said.

They said that assailants riding a motorcycle fired shots at Ameer Iftikhar, 25, when he was getting his bike’s punctured tyre repaired at a tyre shop within the remit of the Eidgah police station.

The suspects rode away after carrying out the shooting.

The victim was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police said that the victim, father of one, was a resident of Kishan Ram Building, Ranchhore Lines. He was associated with the Ranchhore Lines sector of the MQM’s organisational structure, the police added.

Following the killing, tension gripped the locality and armed youths fired into the air forcing shopkeepers to pull down shutters.

Killed in Landhi

A man was shot dead in a Landhi locality on Wednesday.

Police said that two men riding a motorcycle opened fire on another motorcyclist in New Muzaffarabad Colony and escaped.

The victim was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He was later identified as Mohammad Jameel, 35.

The police said that the victim was a resident of the same area and was a shopkeeper.

The motive for the killing was immediately not clear, the police said.

PML-N protest against killing

Scores of workers and supporters of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz staged a sit-in on the main Sharea Faisal in front of the FTC building on Wednesday afternoon in protest against the killing of a party leader and his father.

The protesters carried the coffins of PML-N leader Mian Taimur and his father Mian Arbab, who were gunned down in the early hours of Wednesday in a Defence area.

The sit-in caused a severe traffic jam on the city’s artery. Some of the protesters tried to storm into the FTC building but the police fired into the air and managed to keep them from creating a law and order situation.

Later, the protesters went to Rahmania Masjid, Tariq Road, where the funeral prayers for the slain men were held.

The city leadership of the PML-N attended the funeral. Later the father and son were laid to rest at the Society graveyard.

Two die in accidents

A three-year-old girl was killed when a fast-moving water tanker hit an auto-rickshaw near the Board Office Chowrangi in North Nazimabad on Wednesday.

Police said that the girl, Fouzia, was with her parents and when the water tanker hit the rickshaw she fell down on the road and died. The parents suffered minor injuries.The police said that the water tanker driver managed to speed away.

Meanwhile, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run accident on Manghopir Road. Police said that Mustafa Ghaffar, 45, a resident of Golimar, was killed when a fast-moving vehicle hit him when he was crossing the road near Kamal CNG filling station within the remit of the Pak Colony Police Station.

Another man, identified as Salman, 20, was injured in the accident.

The body and the injured were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
