Good article. Only a political decision can bring peace in Karachi. The only solution is to separate urban Sind from the rest of the province and sooner it is done the better for everyone including rural Sind.

Another report in Dawn today – “Pakistan still global jihad hub” – says it all. It is amazing that Dawn could carry a report of this kind, even if it’s an AFP report.
Assuming that the report is accurate, it is apposite to remember that unimpeachable sources said in the past that 75 to 80% of global terror emanated from Pakistan. We have not seen or heard of a refutation of that view from any Pakistani source.
The report regales Dawn readers with details of where Islamist jihadis come from and what they propose to do after they have been trained in the Afghan-Pak borderlands. US drone strikes seem to have discouraged them to some extent – but only to some extent. This has caused some reduction of numbers of foreign jihadis.
The point is they come from countries in which there is perhaps no scope for their gainful employment as nationals of their respective countries. If they had hope and possibility of making a life in their own countries, they would probably not turn to what they believe is jihad – with or without prospect of achieving wholesome results.
If Dawn is a votary of Islam and what it purports to teach, then Dawn is not performing its duty as a newspaper. The report should have contained some recommendation whether it is right for jihadists to undertake what they have undertaken.
In Dawn, or in Pakistan generally, no one has said that votaries of jihad can hope for the success of the so-called Islamic countries, numbering about 58 among about 200 countries of the world. Does anyone really expect that the 58 could with their aggregated power and strength bring about a successful fight against the rest of the world? The rest of the world comprises for the most part countries whose people are Christians of various sects, but there are also Jews of Israel and Jews in several other countries, Hindus and Sikhs in India and in several other countries, Buddhists of several persuasions in several countries, and followers of other disparate religions around the world. What makes these votaries of jihad think that the rest of the world following non-Islamic persuasions is ready and prepared to welcome their conquest by votaries of jihad? Pray, what is the aggregate of the power and strength of the 58 so called Islamic countries? Do they all pull in the same direction?
Someone in Pakistan should give some thought to the questions raised here. If Pakistan is determined to play host to candidates for jihad from several countries, then it is a question of time before the rest of the world trains its attention on Pakistan.
