Collapse of Jam Sadiq bridge Sir, I was shocked to learn from your editorial of Jan 12 that the Jam Sadiq Ali bridge, which connects the Korangi Industrial Area with the rest of Karachi, is in such bad shape that it may collapse unless immediate repairs are carried out.

May I humbly submit that this bridge is also the only artery which connects Karachi port to the National Highway. Therefore, the government can only ignore its importance at its own peril.

I would strongly recommend that till repairs of this bridge are undertaken, movement of container-mounted trucks must be stopped immediately and all heavy traffic should be diverted to Qayyumabad via Korangi Crossing/Malir River, to prevent a major catastrophe.

On behalf of the industrialists of Korangi Industrial Area, I fervently appeal to the federal government to release the package of Rs2.4 billion for Karachi, which was announced in 2010-11, to prevent loss of lives due to the imminent collapse of the Jam Sadiq Ali bridge.

Travails on Superhighway Sir, It has become troublesome to travel from Hyderabad to Karachi via the Superhighway. Deplorable management of Pakistan Railways compels people to travel by coach or bus. Goods are also transported in large containers, while dumpers are also a regular feature on the highway.

Heavy traffic not only poses a hazard to smaller vehicles, reckless driving is also an issue. Heavy vehicles also damage roads.

The authorities concerned are requested to pay attention to these issues.

Barriers cause traffic jams Sir, I want to draw attention towards the traffic problem in Karachi, which is self-created. One of the main causes of the traffic mess is barriers on streets. Let us take the example of the Nazimabad No 7 traffic signal, where we find massive traffic jams.

Traffic is jammed not just because of a huge flow of vehicles, devastated roads and lack of infrastructure, but also because of barriers on every road and street in the Gol Market and Paposh area, where traffic gets stuck because its free flow is disrupted.

I request the authorities concerned to take immediate action against these barriers on the city’s streets.

Gas shortage in residential localities Sir, There have been numerous recent news reports about the shortage of gas in the city. For the past several days gas pressure in stoves and geysers has been reduced to the lowest, if it has not disappeared altogether.

The residents of Rohailkhund Society, Kokan Society, DMCH Society and Bahadurabad are facing a lot of trouble due to the non-availability of gas for the past two months. In fact, we have lodged several complaints with the authorities concerned but in vain.

I hope that the senior officials concerned at the Sui Southern Gas Company are going to make sure that gas is supplied to us as soon as possible on a regular basis.
