Women's World Cup: Pakistan confined to Barabati Stadium

NEW DELHI: Pakistan's women cricketers in India for the World Cup are staying in the stadium premises instead of a hotel for security reasons, the International Cricket Council said on Tuesday.

The entire squad is living in the club house of the Barabati stadium in the eastern city of Cuttack where Pakistan are due to play its matches in the eight-nation tournament starting on Thursday.

“I can confirm the team is staying at the Barabati stadium,” an ICC spokeswoman told AFP from Cuttack.

“The ICC considered all options and the best security for the teams, and we have chosen to use the Barabati stadium club house.”

Cuttack was added as a last-minute venue after the right-wing nationalist Shiv Sena party threatened to disrupt Pakistan's matches in Mumbai, where the entire tournament was originally scheduled to be played.

Matches in group B -- featuring Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa -- were shunted to Cuttack, where Pakistan will remain if they qualify for the second round.

But the Pakistani team will still have to travel to Mumbai if they make the final at the Brabourne stadium on February 17.

Pakistan team manager Ayesha Ashar said the entire squad was happy with the arrangements made at the Barabati stadium.

“The arrangements are more like we get in Pakistan,” Ashar was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.

“We are happy with the facilities provided to us by the organisers.”

Pakistan open their campaign against Australia at the Barabati stadium on Friday.

ICC is controlled by narrow minded and biased Indians, had the same arrangement being made for Indian cricket team in Pakistan the whole Indian media and officials till now be defaming Pakistan in all forums. Shame on PCB(Punjab Cricket Board) for showing such desperation to send players to India, they should have boycotted the event on security grounds and asked for shifting the venue. Do you think in this atmosphere of fear our team will perform , I am pretty sure they won't reach the rounds where they have to play in Mumbai and forced to lie low. It also expose Indian security arrangements and their capability to provide security for the foreign teams.

You can ask your players to withdraw..we don't have any issue. We are capable enough to host large scale matches (read World Cup) and give security to our guests (unlike Pakistan).

Indians are smart to think ahead as providing security is essential to keep the confidence of international teams / players in their country. Why could Pakistan not provide such security to SriLankans. Why did the team had to travel from one end of the city to another? Like all other organizations in Pakistan most of the people are either interested in paycheks only or they are not qulified for the jobs they are holding, and the result is disaster time and again. Now PCB is getting all kinds of mistreatments in international arena because they are not in a position to hold any matches on their home grounds.

Good questions ?? If this the security cover that's needed to have an international match for all teams, I guess India should not be allowed to host the world cup. However, there is a thin line here. I don't think this is the procedure for every other international team visiting India. This is only for the Pakistani team, due to the escalated tensions, as a safer approach. Please note that there is not even a shred of evidence about any anti-social activity. However, from a broader scale, it is correct in questioning that if a country is not confident in providing security in a hotel to an international team, should it really host a cup??

Dear Dawn, Please do not sensationalize this issue. There is no as such security issue w.r.t Pak team in India and this is already proved during Pakistan men team toured India in dec 2012. Many of Pak artist are living peacefully and that too in mumbai which is shiv sena den. I am not supporter of shiv sena but I don't think they are anyway threat to Pakistan players or artist. We all know the current situation for which Pakistan is 100% responsible. We are aware of love hate relationship between India & Pakistan..so dont worry... Pak team is safe and welcome in India.

apparently its not just Indian media ..... it is the view of the media around the world ..... Pakistan is one of the most dangerous places in the world for westerners, indians, journalists, hindus, christians, shias, sikhs.... there is no denying that there have been threats in India made by some miscreants in the society ...who are just capable of making threats ... but dont have the chutzpah to enact them..... because the Indian establishment has always taken necessary precautions to protect the foreign dignitaries coming to India irrespective of their nationality and profession......

I can understand anguish in minds of Pakistanis but can the Pakistanis try to find answers for the following: Do you really do not know the reason for this hostility ? Why should ICC penalise India when no other team is complaining ? Politics should not be mixed with sports but is terrorism is also politics ? Do you really think that your denials and deflections is enough to getaway with most outragoeus acts of violence by groups based in Pakistan and despite ban by UN they continue to flourish ? Its hard to believe, unfortunately its happening, the world would be a better place without the likes of Shiva Sena and their divisive anti national politics. I dream of my country free of sectarian politics and extremism of any kind. On the other hand, womens cricket does not generate the enthusiasm and the money unlike mens cricket. I read the abysmal remuneration and facilities provided to (Indian) women cricketers in general. However, there is no excuse to provide enough facilities and securities for visiting teams, especially from Pakistan.

This is sad. I am an Indian. I wish your team luck. But I'd really like to say a few things here. Shiv Sena is disliked majorly in India. By most people. Hindus too and many of them Maharshtrians. And MAJORLY. I cannot stress enough on how much they use the strategy of divide-and-rule. They never kill but they riot and just create a slightly hostile environment for no reason. This is another excuse they have got to create a riot to appease to a small minority of people who think Shiv Sena's philosophy of 'we-maharashtrians-are-elite' is cool. But having said that most Indians dont have any intent to insult Pakistan's cricket team. Many who are reacting now are angry because somehow they have been accused of being extremist which they are not. In India all of us have plenty of Muslim friends. How can we be extremist, we have grown up with them and we pride ourselves on Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar just as much as the palaces of Rajasthan. why possibly this last minute step was taken was because Shiv Sena's threat came only at the last minute. Belive me if they harm your team, they will be condemned by the entire country. And their already shrinking vote bank will practically dissapear. I wish you luck. But try not to miscontrue. I know its hard for you to take this without feeling bad. But I hope you understand the compulsions.

It's an utter shame and a total lack of self respect being shown from the Pakistan side. After the Hockey players were sent back and now this, why Pakistan keep going there? Indians have proved time and again that they condone the actions of the extremists otherwise they would have taken actions against the terrorist organization e.g. Shiv Sena. Pakistan squad must have come back or the tournament must have been canceled and moved to some other country. ICC would have been so quick to move the tournament had the same events occurred in Pakistan.

What about behavior with blind cricket team, Women cricket team and students who went to attend Jaipur Festival, all of those were representing Pakistan and with no monetary benefits for Indian people; Let alone hokey player and exclusion of cricketers from IPL.

Thanks Dawn, the answers: 1. What decisive role? Should ICC banned India from international cricket or change the venue? Is it possible or economical for only for one country ICC should change the vanue at the last moment? 2. May be, extra ordinary situation need extra ordinary arrangement. It is a fact that world cricket is run by the fund of which 40% is generated in India. But why the situation so aggravated suddenly? Just last month Pakistani team had played 3 one day and 2 T20 in various venues in India with out any threat or compulsion (staying at the stadium) 3. I think Pakistani team will be much more determined and do not have any pressure of traveling. So this may a blessing in disguise for them. 4. It is Pakistan to decide. But frankly speaking, it is just over hyped. There may not be much problem for Pakistan team to play in Mumbai.

This is ridiculous. I am quite surprised how PCB is allowing this. Pakistan team should just simply come back. ICC doesn't care about our team and hence will never change the venue. Sadly, ICC is ruled by BCCI rather than BCCI being ruled by ICC. Really very sad.

I must ask one simple question at this critical moment, why the world cricket governing body ICC hasn't show any involvement to investigate this hypocrisy and unhuman reception of indian government as well as its board to one International team for the competition. No matter, how strong the team is, the main thing come in this situation the humanity. They should respect their guests, give excellent facilities to them. Also, i'm not happy in the way our board responded to this situation. I think, they don't want other countries to respect us. They should call our team back as soon as they come to know about this decision from Indian government as well as the board. This women team not the beggars or humble individuals but they are the people who represent our country on world stage.

Yeah and you keep supporting your terrorist organization. What a shame for this biggest democracy who has bowed down to extremists. Pakistan at least is fighting against the extremists whereas Indians are supporting them. But don't worry your time will come too when the real face of India is slowly exposed to the world.

India will do anything and everything to ensure safety of players....The players would be given 5-star facilities in the stadium itself....grow up Pakistan (I would be the billionth guy to have asked Pakistan to grow up but I know its of no use)

If this happened in Pakistan all hell would have broken lose. All those Indians who are laughing and supporting this would be on the other side. Having said total blame lies on our spineless board and government. Call our girls home and tell them never again will we have any interaction for another 100 years.

I'm an Indian and I hate Shiv Sena for this. It's really unfortunate. Thank GOD that they are confined to city in and around Mumbai only. Rest of the India hates them and they have no place there

It means India has failed to provide security to the team or stay in their hotels is not safe or they cannot control Shiv Sena ?? It appears to be very depressing for the team? I will not blame if they loose all the matches. Ideally Pakistan should have never sent the team in such a fearful environment.

Shame on ICC and PCB and all that say this not a big issue. Why was the tounament not stopped if security is inadequate. While, other teams practice among themselves, Pakistan is playing a 3rd rate local team twice. IMAGINE this.: Olympics in a middle eastern country and militants threaten violence if Isreal comes to play . Do you think they will just shun the Isreali team to a small town, holed up in a club hose in the intrest of the games??. And if they did, they would ban all muslim countries from sport all together. Why did PCB not threaten legal action on the spot. If India cannot control their violence, then India should not be allowed to hold cricket matches. The Pak Govt should have stepped in to threaten legal action against ICC for their double standards and imediately gotten a court injunction in India to stop the tournament unless this is resolved. ( and shame on Pak Govt for doing nothing) If they won't stand up for their own team, don't expect others to come and play in Pakistan. Violence is just an excuse that western teams will use for as long as they can to avoid going to Pakistan. Their boys don't enjoy going to a country where their is no liqor, night clubs or casual female company avalible for amusement. I wonder how Pakistan would have reacted if the same was happening in the men's World Cup. Would they still accept it? If not, then shame on the whole nation for treating women as second class. Well done Pakistan,you have shown your own true colors of discrimination against your own sisters and daughters, what to talk of others discriminating against you. With tears in my eyes, I have no more to say how I feel about my own country and the utter lack of unity of purpose when our national intrests are at stake.
