Seven more fall prey to targeted killing

KARACHI, Jan 30: Seven people were shot dead in targeted attacks apparently on sectarian and political grounds in different parts of the city on Wednesday, police said.

They said that a young man, said to be a sympathiser of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, was gunned down and a woman was wounded in an armed attack in Baldia Town on Wednesday evening.

The police that as many as six armed men riding three motorbikes came to a medical store in Baldia Town’s ‘24 Market’ and opened indiscriminate fire targeting Raheel Anjum, 22.

A woman, Shaista Aziz, standing at the store also suffered bullet wounds in the attack. The assailants managed to escape.

The victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital Karachi where Raheel was pronounced dead on arrival. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Tension gripped different localities of Baldia Town where shops and market were closed.

Man killed in
‘sectarian’ attack
A young man was gunned down in the Gulbahar area on Wednesday evening, police said.

They said that assailants riding a motorbike targeted Waqar Hussain, 30, near Imambargah Kazmain and rode away. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

A spokesman for the Majlis Wehdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) strongly condemned the killing and said that the victim was active in the locality.

Following the incident, tension gripped the locality as unknown men fired into the air.

Killing in Landhi

A young man was gunned down in Landhi on Wednesday night.

Police said that the killing took place near the Landhi police station where armed bike riders targeted 18-year-old Umair Younus. He sustained a bullet wound in the head.

He was critically wounded and taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he died.

The police said that the teenager and his father had some dispute with some people of different sect over an area mosque.

ST man found shot dead

The body of an activist of the Sunni Tehreek was found on Jamshed Road on Wednesday morning.

Police said that the body, which bore marks of torture, was found in the Jamshed Road No 2 area. The victim was identified as Mohammad Adnan Qadri, 19, who had been shot in the head.

The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi for medico-legal formalities.

A spokesman for the ST told Dawn that the victim had been kidnapped on Tuesday night in the Jehangir Road locality and his body was found on Wednesday morning.

He said he was a member of the Jamshed Road sector of the party’s organisatinal structure.

Man shot dead in Malir

In Malir, motorcycle-riding assailants killed a man and escaped.

Police said that Mohammad Suleman, 42, was targeted when he was sitting outside his house near Jinnah Square within the remit of the Malir City police station.

The victim was rushed to the JPMC where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He sustained bullet wounds in the chest.

The police suspected that the killing had an element of personal enmity, as he was not affiliated with any political or religious outfit.

Killing in Shah Faisal Colony

A man was shot dead in Shah Faisal Colony on Wednesday.

Police said that Mukhtiar Hameed, 35, was going somewhere on his motorbike when assailants, also on a bike, intercepted him in Shah Faisal Colony No 1, fired at him and rode away.

The body was shifted to the JPMC for a post-mortem examination.

The police were not sure about the motive for the killing.

The victim was a resident of the same area where the incident took place.

Woman killed, husband wounded

Two men stormed into a house in Machhar Colony within the remit of the Docks police station, killed a woman and wounded her husband and escaped.

Police said that Ayesha Farooq was killed and her husband Mohammad Farooq was wounded in the attack.

Investigators believed that the attack bore an element of personal enmity.

A 9mm pistol was used in the incident, as several spent bullet casings had been collected from the crime-scene, they added.

A case (FIR 27/2013) was registered under Section 302 (premeditated murder) and 324 (attempted murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code against Haroon, Waqas, Nehar Ali and Aqib on a complaint of wounded Farooq.

‘Bandit’ killed in encounter

A suspected bandit was killed and a passer-by was wounded in what police described as an encounter in the SITE area on Wednesday.

The police said that armed men were fleeing after depriving some passers-by of their cash and valuable when a police patrol started chasing them. They fired at the police who retaliated. A bandit, later identified as Nathoray Khan, and pedestrian Mohammad Imran were wounded in the firing.

The wounded were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where the suspected bandit died during treatment, while the pedestrian was admitted for treatment.

The police claimed to have recovered a pistol from the possession of the suspect.

Wounded ASWJ cleric dies

A middle-aged man who had been wounded in an armed attack on Jan 26 died at a local hospital on Wednesday.

The police said that Maulana Shoaib of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat was wounded in a targeted attack in Orangi Town along with an associate who died on the spot.
