MEASLES, also called morbilli, is a highly contagious respiratory infection that is usually caused by a virus called rubeola. The disease has spread to different areas of Sindh, such as Shikarpur, Shahdadkot, Tando Allahyar and Golarchi.

The infection spreads through stagnated floodwater and during the monsoon as there is no potable water available to various communities. This infection spreads fast in Punjab, especially in Lahore.

So far 400 children have lost their lives, as most of the doctors are not performing their duties properly. In most of the hospitals they intentionally sell vaccines on black. The poor cannot afford to pay much and are thus at a loss.

In Sindh the chief minister has proclaimed that Rs5,000 would be provided to those parents who have lost their children. What an irony! How can such a meagre amount compensate for the loss of a child’s life?

It should be stated here that the role of NGOs has remained commendable in helping infected children. Their staff has been performing efficiently, including providing healthy food to children.
