QUETTA, Feb 2: Chief Secretary of Balochistan Babar Yaqoob Fateh gave a cheque of Rs1 million to the widow of Abdul Haq Baloch on behalf of Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Saturday.

Abdul Haq Baloch, the general secretary of the Khuzdar Press Club, was working for ARY TV channel when he was gunned down by unidentified men in September while on his way home.

The prime minister had announced Rs1m in compensation to his family.

“I have handed over Rs1m cheque to the widow of late Abdul Haq on behalf of prime minister,” Babar Yaqoob said.

He said the government would continue to support media fraternity in view of threats they were facing while performing professional duties in Balochistan.

“All-out efforts are being made to ensure peace in the region and provide protection to journalists,” he added.

He said the wife of Mr Haq would be given a government job.
