India imposes curfew in Kashmir after Afzal Guru’s execution

SRINAGAR: Security forces imposed a curfew Saturday in parts of Indian-administered Kashmir while the centre of the main city Srinagar was sealed off by police after the execution of a separatist.
Residents in rural areas said police used loud hailers to order them to stay indoors from daybreak as it emerged that Mohammed Afzal Guru, a member of an Islamist group fighting Indian rule in the divided region, was to be hanged.
Although there was no formal curfew order in Srinagar, police hastily erected barricades across main entry roads and in the city centre in a bid to prevent any possible demonstrations against the execution.
Three police helicopters could also be seen hovering overhead in Srinagar, the main city in what is India’s only Muslim majority state.
Authorities at the University of Kashmir in Srinagar meanwhile issued a statement announcing that examinations due to take place on Saturday had been cancelled.
Guru was executed at a jail near Delhi after being found guilty of conspiring with and sheltering militants who attacked the Indian parliament in December 2001, an incident that brought India and Pakistan to the brink of war.
India alleged the militants behind the parliament attack were supported by Pakistani intelligence, leading the nuclear-armed rivals to deploy an estimated one million troops to their borders for eight months.
A former chief minister of Kashmir once warned that executing him would lead the country to “go up in flames” because of a backlash from rebels in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Kashmiris want peace , development and a safe place for their children and families to grow and prosper in. They are tired of the hate spread using religion as a vehicle and have started reducing their efforts to appear as separatists for someone else’s agenda in Indian administered Kashmir. The anticipatory curfew is required to stop the separatist inclined from harming the rest, and keep aman, shanti in India’s states.
I think that is the right thing Govt. did to hang him because this will give the others message not to violate the law and order in democracy.
Terrorists know no religion, no caste , no community ,no humanity ,no kindness ,no law ,no territory , no nationality , no patriotism but are enemies of mankind . They should be dealt strictly , seriously , severely by the cruel arms of law . The people of India and Pakistan both should oppose them in the interest of keeping peace and tranquility in the south Asia . Kashmir people should co-operate the administration in maintaining peace and harmony in the state because violence can not solve any problem rather can deteriorate and aggravate the normalcy . Let all problems be solved amicably , mutually so that both nations can reduce defence expenditure and be able to divert expenditure on account of social welfare.

Contrary to the lies that have been put about by some senior journalists who would have known better, Afzal Guru was not one of “the terrorists who stormed Parliament House on December 13th 2001” nor was he among those who “opened fire on security personnel, apparently killing three of the six who died.” (That was Chandan Mitra, now a BJP Rajya Sabha MP, in The Pioneer, October 7th 2006). Even the police charge sheet does not accuse him of that.
Nothing will happen as the leaders of Hurriat have become only opportunists using religion to meet their personal objectives
There is no justice for kashmiris in India. Pakistan should hang Sarabjit Singh so that they get the messege.
do it. and clear all the obstacle which are hindring progress. As too much energy getting wasted in long standing minor issues. move on. lot many people died everyyear in both country. so one more will not be an issue. Take the decision and go-ahead
adding to my earlier comments, all these issues used by both sides left and right polotical sides uses them for there benifit. and not concentrating on development. if person found guilty in court and court order death sentance. Then execute. follow the law of land. Politicians hide there inefficiancy behind all these

afzal got what he deserved.
airport in srinagar is much better and modern than the international airport in islamabad.
Regardless of Mr. Guru’s innocence or culpability, the govt. of India showed the spine to carry out court orders. In Pakistan, first off the culprits involved sectarian violence, and in rare cases when courts condemn them to death, these orders are never carried out.
Hang the 68 inmates responsible for sectarian killings and this menace can be brought under control.

What happens in Kashmir is irrelevant,the relevant thing is that India finally got the courage to hang Afzal. Terrorists and mass murderers like Kasab deserve no mercy.
Biggest mistake is Afzal should be ppunished severaly. Hanging is no punishment for this kind of crime.
2ndly that punishment should be public, tortutring taking nails out,cutting his body parts one b one
3rdly punishment should have been long long back.
Bansal, you have assumed Afzal was guilty. What IF he was not? Have you considered it even for a second? Do you really think it’s impossible for a govt. to frame someone who is actually innocent? I wish the violence of your imagination could be matched with a little reflection.
I am pleased Afzal was hanged today, it is good riddance to bad rubbish, As a citizen and non citizen you have moral responisbility
