KARACHI: Following the passage of a new bill approved by the provincial assembly on Tuesday, Sind province will now officially be referred to as “Sindh”.

The provincial assembly has approved the Sindh Laws Amendment Bill 2012, which calls for the change in spelling – the “H” has now been added to the province’s name.

The bill, presented by opposition lawmaker Arif Mustafa Jatoi, is the first private bill to be unanimously approved in the provincial assembly in the past five years.

According to the bill, the spelling for the province will be ammended with the addition of an "H" in all legal acts and ordinances.

“Sindhu” was probably the original name of Sindh, which was also likely the original name for the River Indus. The Greeks changed the name of the River Sindhu to the River Indos when they conquered Sindh in 125 BC under Alexander the Great – hence, the modern name, the River Indus.

A previous version of this news item erroneously reported the new spelling as "Sind". The error is regretted.
