PESHAWAR, Feb 27: Eight people were killed and several others wounded when heavy rain coupled with hailstorm hit parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal areas on Wednesday.

The rains started on Monday evening in Peshawar and surrounding areas and continued till late on Wednesday night, inundating roads and streets due to chocked sewage lines causing problems for people.

According to local Met office, during last 24 hours Peshawar received 16 millimetre rain, Parachinar (Kurram Agency) 80mm, Upper Dir 63mm, Lower Dir 57mm, Saidu Sharif and Pattan (Kohistan) 57mm each, Malam Jabba 50mm, Rislapur 55mm, Drush 55, Chiral 37mm, Balakot 36, Bannu 35, Abbottabad 32mm, Kohat 28mm and D I Khan 27mm. Two feet snow was recorded in Kalam and one foot each in Malam Jabba and Drush, the Met office said.

LANDI KOTAL: Three people, including two girls, were killed and 11 others injured when heavy rain lashed Khyber Agency.

In Jamrud, Shazia, 13, and her sister Khalida, 11, were buried alive when roof of their house collapsed in Sra Kamar area. Father of the girls Ashraf Gul, grandfather Said Ahmad and Abdullah, 10, were injured in the incident. They were admitted to local hospital.

In another such incident, a young man Akram Shah was killed when flashflood swept his car in Landi Kotal. Four other passengers of the same car were injured.

In Abdul Khad village two minor brothers were injured when roof of their house collapsed while five-year-old Laila was critically injured in a similar incident in Peerokhel village.

In Ali Masjid area, on person was injured when a truck fell on his car due to slippery road. Excessive rains and flooding of streams also caused suspension of traffic on main Peshawar-Torkham road for nearly five hours.  The road was cleared after midday.

CHARSADDA: A young man identified as Zahid was killed and his brother suffered injuries when roof of their house collapsed in Mandani area of Charsadda district due to heavy downpour.

The local people retrieved the body of Zahid and took his brother, Abid, to hospital. Several houses also collapsed in Bahlola, Remza and other localities, but there were no causalities.

BATKHELA: Two people were killed and three others wounded in a head on collision between two cars in Pirano Kalley amid low visibility owing to heavy rain in Malakand protected area.

Those killed were identified as Mutazera, wife of Khalilur Rehman, and Bacha Bibi, wife of Fazlur Rehman, while Hamid Ali and Ilyas, the drivers, and Sonia, daughter of Khalilur Rehman, were taken to DHQ hospital, Batkhela, in critical condition.

BUNER: A man was killed by lightning in Pland Mora area here as heavy rain paralysed life in the district.

The victim was identified as Mohammad Zada of Pland Mora. Residents said that they rushed to the site of lightning and retrieved the body of Mr Zada.

KARAK: One person was killed and four others were injured in rain-related incidents in Karak. The rain also caused damage to several houses in different parts of the district.

Police said that one Javaid was killed when roof of his room caved in due to intermittent rain in Banda Daud Shah tehsil.

In Mammikhel area, a room of a house collapsed, resulting in injuries to Razzaq, Nasir, Jamshed and Kamal. The residents rescued and took them to the local hospital, from where they were referred to Peshawar in precarious condition.

Local people said that several houses collapsed due to rain in Kundi, Shanki Banda, Azarkhel and Galli Shah areas of Karak and Banda Daud Shah tehsils.

GHALANAI: Two people were injured when roof of their house caved in due to rain in Yaseen Kor Lakkai area of Haleemzai  tehsil in Mohmand Agency on Wednesday. In Swabi, heavy rain coupled with hailstorm was recorded in parts of Topi tehsil and residential colony of Tarbela dam on Wednesday.
