LAHORE. March 3: Fancied bay colt Denzaro etched his name in the annals of the Pakistan Derby after producing a majestic burst of speed to outclass his rivals to win the country’s premier classic race at the Racecourse here on Sunday.

The 50 to 100 favourite colt Denzaro, trained by Abdul Rasheed, was guided by jockey Aamir Pervez in the 2,400-metre event before a large crowd of equine sports lovers.

He defeated filly Raks-e-Hawa by seven lengths. Third place went to filly Hidden Pearl with another filly, Domination, fourth in the ninth race of the day, sponsored by Lake City Holdings.

The main supporting event, the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup run over 2,000 metres was won in a thrilling finish by imported English filly Linn County, ridden by jockey M. Hanif and trained by Haji Abid Mahmood.

This was filly’s first outing in Lahore and the first big triumph for owner Makhdoom Syed Ahmed Mahmood.

Linn County beat bay horses Jhalwan Blue with chestnut horse Pathan third.

In the second supporting event, the National Breeders Cup, rank outsider colt Subah Sadiq, ridden by jockey M. Hanif, prevailed over another outsider colt Sufyan Prince to win by three-fourth a length.

Filly Malik’s Love finished third with another filly Prosperity fourth. Favourite colt The Incredible ran hopelessly poor to finish among also ran.

Long shot filly Divine Angel, brilliantly ridden by jockey A. Raza, won the Stewards Cup run over 1,400 metres in a runaway style. She beat bay filly Royal Fairy by three lengths. The Tauqir Ahmed-trained filly covered the race distance in one minute 26 1/5 seconds to give the leading trainer his third winner of the day.

Earlier in the sixth race, Tauqir registered another cup victory through mare Golden Rose who bagged the LRC Cup run over 1,400 metres.

The Derby day races turned out to be most successful for owner Shahid Hussain and trainer Tauqir who each won three races, including two cup races. Both began the day with an easy success on Amazing Grace in the fourth race and followed it up with victories in the LRC and Stewards cups through Golden Rose and Divine Angel. The duo shared the racing honours with jockey Hanif who rode three winners. Jockey A. Raza and trainer Haji Abid Mahmood scored a double piece.

The races, however, were marred by an ugly incident in which owner Mian Haroon thrashed trainer Sohail Aziz and jockey M. Zulfiqar after the last event of the day. The Lahore Race Club (LRC) stewards took a prompt decision and warned off the owner from the club premises.
