KARACHI, March 7: An earthquake of moderate intensity, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale, hit lower Sindh on Thursday evening at 8:56 pm, said officials at the earthquake section of the Met Office in Islamabad.

According to the Met Office officials, the epicentre of the earthquake was around 172 kilometres south-east of Karachi and 10 kilometres deep in the ground.

He said that the exact location was 24.23 degrees latitude and 68.69 degrees longitude, in the proximity of Thatta and Badin districts.

There were no immediate reports of any major damage or loss of lives, they added.

Meanwhile, people of Jati and Sujawal towns in Thatta district said they felt a mild earthquake at 9:06pm.

A similar tremour had shaken Thatta and Makli towns, and the hilly area in Jhimpir in January 2008 at about 9:40 am.
