TAXILA, March 13: With deadline for dissolution of assemblies a few days away, the local leadership of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is busy inaugurating different incomplete development projects, which were announced at the beginning of this fiscal year.
Leader of the Opposition Ch Nisar Ali Khan, who is elected to National Assembly from this constituency, had announced scores of development projects last year. The projects include construction of roads, streets, drainage system, provision of water supply and re-carpeting of roads.
One can see local leadership of the PML-N haphazardly erecting inauguration board at every incomplete project in the city.
Some of these boards carry the name of the leader of the opposition Ch Nisar Ali Khan, though he was not present even in the city.
Inside sources said the projects were aimed at wooing voters and facilitating the party workers as all the projects were initiated in their areas. Besides, the schemes were awarded to only those contractors who are supporters of the party.
Sources said that most of the projects broke down before inauguration as multimillion re-carpeted Faisal Shaheed (Taxila- Hattar) road and railway road were lying in tatters.
When contacted, Malik Umer Farooq, local PML-N leader and spouse of local MPA, who is instrumental in inaugurating these projects on behalf of party leaders said that the funds for the execution of development projects were announced by Ch Nisar Ali Khan in different public meetings in Taxila and Wah Cantt.
He said that the projects were being initiated on the recommendation of development projects committee and funds are being provided from MNA and MPA development grant. Responding to a question, he rejected the notion that development projects were launched to win voters support.
He said they were aimed at “solving the problems of the people”. Responding to another question, he said that as the tenure of the present set-up was going to end in next few days, the projects are being formally inaugurated in advance.
After announcement of caretaker set-up, the PML-N leaders would not be entitled to inaugurate the projects as it would be the violation of the election commission instructions.
