KARACHI: Former city nazim Niamatullah Khan on Saturday filed an objection statement to the Returning Officer (RO) at the city court over the nomination papers of Pervez Musharraf who is hoping to contest from NA-250 in the coming general election.

Speaking to Dawn.com over telephone, Niamatullah’s aide and long time associate, Rashid Qureshi, said: “We are objecting over the fact that Musharraf violated the Constitution twice during his rule, sacked the chief justice and is answerable in the Bugti murder case and the Lal Masjid operation. How can such a man contest in the election?”

Qureshi, who was outside the city court at the time, said anyone who violates the Constitution is a “traitor” and that it is enough cause to reject Musharraf’s nomination papers.

It is pertinent to mention that Niamatullah is also contesting election from the same constituency in Karachi as Musharraf. He would be contesting on a Jamaat-i-Islami ticket.

Niamatullah was the mayor of Karachi between 2001 to 2005.
