KARACHI, April 8: At least two peacocks died in a remote village of Tharparkar district on Monday, sources told Dawn.

The peacocks, they said, were found dead in Sangelo village in Diplo taluka.

However, they could not confirm the exact cause of death.

“Our team is there in the village and another one will be sent on Tuesday,” said a Thar-based wildlife department official.

Samples from the dead animals would be sent to Karachi to identify the cause of deaths, the official said, adding that the department’s drive to give medicines to birds in the affected areas was already under way.

According to the official, 72 peafowl had died in the Newcastle outbreak that hit Thar last year. Media reports, however, suggested that more than 200 peafowl lost their lives in the epidemic.
