BUNER/PESHAWAR, April 19: A woman and two children were killed on Friday when an unexploded mortar shell went off in Shewai area of Buner district.

According to police and local residents, 30-year-old Zeenat, 10-year-old Aalia and six-year-old Shahab of Shewai village in Mandan tehsil in jurisdiction of Nawagai police station went to local fields to serve lunch to male members of their family.

On the way, they found an unexploded mortar shell and hit it to the ground.

As a result, the shell exploded, killing all three on the spot.

The bodies were later shifted to the Civil Hospital, Nawagai for autopsy. Afterwards, they were handed over to the family concerned for burial.

Police registered a case of the incident and began investigation.

THREE INJURED IN PESHAWAR BLAST: Three people were injured when a huge blast took place near Adezai village on the outskirts of Peshawar on Friday.

An official of Mattani police station said suspected militants had planted an improvised explosive device in the fields and blasted it by remote control.

The injured were Jaffar Khan, Fazal Ameen and Ameen Khan, all from Adezai village.

The official said the bomb was packed in a ghee canister and weighed around five kilogrammes.

He said soon after the blast, personnel of the bomb disposal unit showed up and combed rest of the area for explosive devices.

When contacted, chief of Adezai Qaumi Lashkar Fazal Malik said a group of youths used to sit under the shade of a fig tree and terrorists had tried to kill them but they were lucky enough to survive the attempt of their life.

He said in the prevailing situation, no one’s life was safe as militants were frequently issuing threats to local residents.

Also in the day, a constable was injured when suspected militants attacked an Aziz Market police checkpost in a Peshawar area bordering Khyber Agency.

A police official said the injured policeman, Izat Khan, was on duty when he was shot at from the nearby tribal region.

He said the policeman had suffered bullet injury and was under treatment.

The official said police returned fire but attackers fled towards the tribal area.

He said militants had attacked the checkpost several times this year.
