KARACHI, April 25: Fast bowler Mohammad Abbas grabbed a superlative 13-wicket haul as Pakistan Television (PTV) trounced Sayid Paper Mills by nine wickets in less than two days on Thursday to qualify for the final of the Patron’s Trophy Grade-II cricket tournament.
The 23-year-old right-arm Sialkot-born bowler followed his seven for 51 in the first innings with six for 75 as Sayid Paper Mills were dismissed for 241 in their second innings to leave PTV a meagre 33-run target at the Mirpur Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Azad Jammu Kashmir. Abbas finished with match figures of 13 wickets for 126.
The highpoint of Sayid Paper Mills’ otherwise disappointing batting performance was Asif Ali who slammed a hurricane 90 from only 40 balls with the aid of 15 boundaries and three sixes. Salman Ali (32 with three fours) and Rana Adnan (31, six fours) were the other notable scorers.
Left-arm seamer Nasrullah Khan supported Abbas well with match haul of four for 91.
Earlier, PTV skipper Imad Wasim converted his overnight score of 33 into a fine century as his side extended their Wednesday’s total of 193-5 to 325 all out in 74.2 overs. All-rounder Imad scored 106 and adorned his 151-ball innings with 18 hits to the fence.
Paceman Naseer Akram was Sayid Paper Mills’ leading wicket-taker with five for 125 with Salman Ali chipping in with three for 65.
PTV’s opponents in the April 29-May 2 final in Mirpur are certain to be the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) who put themselves in driving seat against Omar Associates in the other semi-final at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.
After piling up 467-5 in their stipulated first-innings quota of 83 overs, the KESC reduced Omar Associates to 259 all out in 58.4 overs after the latter resumed at 20-0 on day two of the three-day fixture.
Right-handed opener Mohammad Waqas and Fahad-ul-Haq were the only batsmen to make noteworthy contributions with 71 apiece in contrasting styles as the duo shared a fourth-wicket partnership of 92 in 59 minutes. The left-handed Fahad, who was easily the dominant partner, struck six boundaries and a brace of sixes during his 56-ball knock before being caught at midwicket by Bismillah Khan off spinner Rizwan Khan.
Waqas perished when he was run out by his unrelated namesake, Mohammad Waqas, after battling for 221 minutes and striking nine fours during his 122-ball innings.
Omar Associates’ skipper Mansoor Amjad made an uncharacteristic 26 with a solitary boundary from 69 balls while helping Waqas put on 65 for the third wicket. Tail-ender Haris Ayaz hit three fours in scoring a 23-ball 20 before providing off-spinner Rizwan with his fourth wicket.
Left-arm paceman Mir Hamza captured three wickets for 69 runs in 18 overs, while Rizwan had four for 66 in 15 overs.
The KESC, who decided against enforcing the follow on despite enjoying a huge lead of 208 runs on the first innings, lost three wickets – all to paceman Rizwan Akbar with his victims Ahsan Ali (1), Bismillah (3) and Akbar-ur-Rehman (7) all being bowled – in reaching 116-3 at draw of stumps, while holding an overall lead of 324.
The left-handed Waqas, who scored 119 on Wednesday, was batting with 72 (101 balls, 12 fours) and Saad Ali (24) with pair thus far adding 73 for the unbroken fourth-wicket stand.
Rizwan Akbar atoned for his unflattering analysis of 1-105 in the first innings with three for 28 from 11 overs.
A draw on Friday will be enough for the KESC to make their second straight final.
