LANDI KOTAL, May 1: The Khyber Agency political administration has finalised a security plan for the May 11 elections under which 46 of the 122 polling stations have been declared sensitive.

Returning officer for NA-45 Dr Jehangir Azam Wazir told Dawn on Wednesday that 10 khasadars would be deployed at every polling station and that additional security measures would be put in place for sensitive polling stations.

He said the Frontier Corps personnel would assist khasadar and levies personnel in patrolling all routes in Landi Kotal and Jamrud on the polling day.

“Security forces will jointly conduct patrolling of Loe and Kam Shalman, Jarhubi, Karamna, Sapari, Malagori, Ghundi, Shah Kas, Ali Masjid and other nearby localities,” he said.

The returning officer said the administration was taking all possible steps to ensure security of candidates and voters.

“The administration receives information about the entry of an explosives laden vehicle in the area with its possible target being a public rally or a procession,” he said.

Mr Wazir said the administration was not in a position to make security plan public before the election day as it could provide terrorists with a chance to change their plan.

BAN ON ELECTIONEERING CRITICISED: Candidates from NA-46, Khyber Agency have complained of the ban on electioneering by tribal candidates in Peshawar and said the ban was illegal and unconstitutional.

Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf candidate Iqbal Afridi told Dawn that his party had serious reservations about the ban as its candidates were unable to conduct campaign inside Bara tehsil during to military operation and curfew.

He said his party would not follow the ban as it was in violation of the election rules and regulation.

“We demand restoration of peace in Bara and return of all displaced families before the imposition of such ban,” he said.

Similar views were expressed by Jamaat-i-Islami candidate Shah Faisal Afridi from the constituency.
