ISLAMABAD, May 11: Saturday was a special day for Pakistanis because except for a few areas there was no loadshedding in the country.

Official data of the Ministry for Water and Power shows that domestic demand of electricity on Saturday was estimated at 11,000MW against generation of 11,000MW, leaving no shortfall.

A spokesperson for the ministry, Tanveer Alam, told Dawn that there would be no loadshedding in any part of the country till Sunday morning.

He said there was no issue of shortfall and if there was electricity disruption in some areas it might be because of technical problems.

Contrary to the official claim, however, some areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, especially Upper Dir, faced electricity disruption for quite some time.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance said the special cell established in the ministry had received nine complaints since the morning. The complaints were received from Multan, Amur Sadhu (Lahore), Muzaffargarh, Upper Dir and Pasrur (Sialkot).

He said the complaints had been forwarded to officials concerned and electricity was restored soon. However, he added, most cases of electricity disruption were related to infrastructure issues.

He said electricity supply to Vehari Chak No 228 ED was yet to be restored and the department concerned was working to remove the fault.

A resident of Upper Dir told Dawn by telephone that electricity remained suspended in his area for most of the day.

Col Rana Sajjad, a spokesperson for Pepco (Pakistan Electric Power Company), told Dawn that there was no loadshedding of electricity in Lahore and other parts of the country. He said the electricity supply might be disrupted in some areas because of infrastructure issues.

Some residents of Lahore lodged complaints with the finance ministry’s special cell about disruption of electricity.

Caretaker Minister for Water and Power Dr Musadik Malik is monitoring the situation of electricity supply from a control room set up at the Wapda House, Lahore.
