NAWABSHAH, May 13: A teenage supporter of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement who had suffered serious injuries in a clash with the Pakistan Peoples Party activists at the Gup school polling station in Taj Colony on election day died here on Monday.

Naveed Malik, 14, was the third MQM worker to die so far in clashes on election day.

Tension gripped Nawabshah city throughout the day as markets remained completely closed and there was almost no traffic on the roads.

Personnel of police and Rangers were deployed at different flashpoints while army troops seen on roads on late Sunday night were absent on Monday.

Shaheed Benazirabad Deputy Commissioner Agha Nasir told Dawn that the army was on standby. It would be called as a last resort when required, he said, adding the situation was under control for the time being.

Meanwhile, family members of Ghulam Rasool, an MQM activist, who died in a clash with PPP workers in sessions court on Sunday and a large number of MQM workers and supporters held a demonstration by placing the body on Sanghar road.

Enraged protesters staged a sit-in, chanted slogans and demanded immediate arrest of killers. Later, Namaz-i-Janaza was offered and the body was laid to rest in Farsi Bagh graveyard.

Shaukat Ali Malik, brother of another MQM worker Irfan Malik who died in Gup school firing incident, lodged an FIR with the A-section police station against Imdad Dhamrah, district general secretary of PPP, his son Aijaz and an unknown person, accusing them of killing his brother.

No arrests were made till the filing of this report.
