FAISALABAD, May 18: A large number of people attacked a police team and injured a constable for allegedly torturing a man to death.

Scores of residents of Chak 7-JB blocked traffic on Sargodha Road near Bawa Chak after learning that Muhammad Waris had been tortured to death by the CIA Sheikhupura team.

The infuriated protesters threw stones on the police and subjected a constable to torture.

Aslam, a protester, told reporters that the CIA had arrested Waris on Friday and took him to Sheikhupura. He said Waris’ family was worried about him and got the shocking news that he had passed away in the police custody. The protestors dispersed for the time being but again emerged on the road, chanting slogans against the police. They later dispersed when the police assured them that action would be taken against the policemen.

The Faisalabad police said Waris was involved in two cases registered with the Saddar Gojra police. First case (709) was registered on Dec 13, 2011, under sections 395, 400, 412, 413 and 414 of the PPC and second (81/12) was registered on March 12 last under section 13/20/65 of the Pakistan Arms Ordinance Act, 1965.

A case has been registered against sub-inspector Ameer and six of his subordinates, the police said.

RECOVERED: A bailiff of the district and sessions judge has recovered an illegally-detained man from the Gulfishan Colony police post on Saturday.

Ghulam Ghaus of Allama Iqbal Colony had been taken into custody by the police on Friday night on suspicion of his involvement in robberies. Ghaus is a butcher by profession.

A relative of Ghaus had filed a writ petition before the sessions judge, Rasheed Qamar, requesting his recovery from the police detention. The bailiff raided the police post and checked its record but found nothing against Ghaus.

The detainee was produced before the judge who released him and summoned the police post head and the applicant for Monday (tomorrow).
