KARACHI: Maulana Ihteshamul Haq Thanvi yesterday urged the Government not to allow anything which would create discord and ill-will among the people of the various regions of the country.

He was addressing a public meeting at Patel Park in observance of “Black Day” to protest against the arbitrary assessment of property tax in Karachi under the East Pakistan Urban Immovable Tax Act.

The Maulana in his presidential address regretted that the Islamic ideology which was the basis of Pakistan had almost been forgotten and its place had been taken by narrow-minded nationalism and parochialism.

The result, he said, was that East Pakistanis who at one time thought only of Islamic brotherhood were now asking for parity. And now similar feelings existed in the minds of the people of Karachi.

The Maulana recalled that when the interim government was formed shortly before Partition, there was no representative from East Pakistan representing the Muslim League. Yet no East Pakistani ever said a word about it.

Still later, after the establishment of Pakistan, East Pakistan offered Assembly seats to Mr Liaquat Ali Khan, Maulana Shabbir Ahmad Usmani and Dr I.H. Qureshi. Even during Cabinet formations, East Pakistan at times did not get its due share. And yet no one ever raised an objection.

This, Maulana Ihteshamul Haq said, was only due to the fact that the people of East Pakistan knew only of the Islamic ideology and cared little if one region or the other got a little less or more. — Staff Correspondent

Nehru blames Pakistan NEW DELHI: The Indian Prime Minister Mr Nehru, while addressing a public meeting yesterday (May 22) at Panjim, capital of Goa, accused Pakistan of trying to blackmail India during Sino-Indian border conflicts.

Mr Nehru said that when China attacked India, Pakistan threatened India and tried to “blackmail” it to agree to all kinds of demands about Kashmir. — Agencies
