LONDON, May 24: German club Wolfsburg ended Olympique Lyon’s two-year reign as women’s Champions League holders with a shock 1-0 win over the French side in Thursday’s final at Stamford Bridge.

Wolfsburg, who were playing in the competition for the first time, became the first team to defeat the French champions in normal time in 120 games thanks to a second-half penalty from Martina Mueller.

Muller drove her spot-kick past Sarah Bouhaddi in the 73rd minute after Laura Georges handled in the area and Ralf Kellermann’s team held on through the nervous final minutes to secure their first continental crown and shatter Lyon’s hopes of a record third Champions League title.—Agencies
