LAHORE, May 29: Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre is organising various activities in connection with the World No Tobacco Day to be marked on May 31 (tomorrow) to create public awareness about prevention of cancer caused by smoking.

A press release issued on Wednesday said SKMCH&RC organised Anti-Tobacco Poster Competition 2013 in all the major educational institutions across Pakistan. Some 6,000 posters were received for the contest.

At a ceremony to be held at the hospital on May 31 the contest winners will be awarded shields by the management.

According to a research nearly 40 per cent of cancers in adult males of Pakistan can be associated with tobacco use while 60,000 people die from tobacco-related diseases in the country annually.

The hospital has already started organising awareness sessions at colleges and universities where the experts are delivering comprehensive lectures, highlighting the cause of lung cancer and other smoking-related fatal diseases like heart attack, chronic lung problems, peptic ulcers and tuberculosis. — Staff Reporter
