KARACHI, June 2: Three workers of the Sunni Tehrik and an activist of the Jamaat-i-Islami were gunned down in the city on Sunday, police said.

They said that a violent clash between two rival groups in Shah Faisal Colony No 5 on Sunday led to the killing of three persons and injuries to two others.

They said that an exchange of gunfire between the two groups has also triggered fear and anxiety among the residents.

Shah Faisal SP Irfan Mukhtar Bhutto said: “Three persons gunned down while two others sustained injuries in the clash”.

“We are investigating as to what had triggered the fighting,” said DIG-East Zone Captain Tahir Naveed.

He said the victims were said to be workers of the ST.

The head of the emergency department of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Dr Seemin Jamali, said that two men were brought dead from Shah Faisal Colony and they were identified as Jawad alias Sunni and Fahim Abdul Majid.

She added that a third body was also brought to the health facility from the same area later on. The victim was identified as Muhammad Irfan.

She said that one wounded, Syed Karar Hussain, was brought at the hospital for treatment from the same area with bullet wounds to his leg.

A spokesman for the ST told Dawn that their three workers were murdered in Shah Faisal Colony.

Tension prevailed in the locality following the violent clash as shops and other commercial activities were shutdown.

JI man killed in Surjani

An activist of the Jamaat-i-Islami was gunned down in Surjani Town in what police described as an apparent incident of targeted killing on Sunday.

Hanif Ansari, 50, was getting his motorcycle repaired at a mechanic shop near Khan Coaches’ terminus when two armed motorcyclists opened fire on him and fled, the police said, adding that he sustained two bullet wound in the neck and hand.

He was taken to the JPMC, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The killers used a 9mm pistol in the attack.

“The victim was a JI worker in the area,” said Surjani SHO Shabbir Ahmed.

A JI spokesperson, Zahid Askari, told Dawn that a victim’s son, Muhammad Azhar, was also gunned down in the same area in a targeted attack a few months ago.

Two bullet-riddled bodies found

Bullet-riddled bodies of two young men were found in the Kathore area, off the Superhighway on Sunday, said Gadap City police officials.

They said it appeared that the victims had been kidnapped, tortured and then shot dead, before being dumped in the bushes near the Pakistan Hotel.

The victims appeared to be in their 20s and belonging to the Pakhtun community, said Gadap City SHO Khan Nawaz. Their bodies bore multiple bullet wounds, said the police, adding that their hands and legs were also tried, he said.

The bodies were moved to Edhi morgue for identification after a post-mortem examination was conducted at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Man killed, two brothers wounded

A young man was shot dead and his two brothers were allegedly wounded in Shah Latif Town over a freewill marriage dispute.

Police said that five gunmen riding two motorcycles stormed a house near Jogi Mor and opened indiscriminate fire on the inmates before fleeing without any resistance. As a result, 22-year-old Muhammad Rafiq was killed while his brothers, 45-year-old Abdul Karim, and 35-year-old Abdul Hameed were wounded. All were taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Shah Latif police station SHO Ali Hassan said that the incident appeared to be a result of a marriage dispute. He said the family of the victim belonged to Sanghar but resided here in the city.

He said that two years back when the victim had been living in Ghazi Goth, near Safoora, he had developed interest in a girl whom he had later married in court in Sanghar. However, the in-laws hadn’t approved the marriage.

The victim’s family afterwards moved to Jogi Mor where this incident occurred. The victim leaves behind a widow and a minor son.

Police said that a case had been registered against five brothers-in-law of the victim.
