A Victory at Chicago
|
|
|
DAWN’s public awareness campaign, on behalf of DAWNRELIEF – launched in order to support the victims of the Black Saturday Earthquake of October 8, 2005 – has won the prestigious International Newspaper Marketing Association (INMA) Award for Community Service on Friday, April 7, at a glittering ceremony in Chicago.
|
The INMA awards are renowned for rewarding excellence in newspaper
marketing to publications across the globe. The awards ceremony in
Chicago this year attracted an elite audience of editors, publishers and
marketeers from across the international media.
This is not our first INMA Award, we have previously won four*. But this
time, our victory was about our effort to highlight the ongoing tragedy
of the people of the western Himalayan region, particularly of northern
Pakistan and Kashmir.
This is a victory, all the more sweeter, because it emerges as a tribute
not just to the work of DAWNRELIEF in Azad Kashmir, but to the over half
a million readers of DAWN who responded with both moral and material
support.
The INMA Award is also a tribute to the hundreds of volunteers and
sympathetic organisations who extended us a helping hand in setting up
some eight thousand survivors of Black Saturday in tent villages in the
Upper Jhelum Valley.
More significantly, the INMA Award is a tribute to the memory of over a
hundred thousand souls that perished in Kashmir and northern Pakistan on
Black Saturday. It is also a grim reminder that more needs to be
accomplished in the region in order to fully rehabilitate the lives of
over four million survivors of this tragedy.
* DAWN’s award on behalf of DAWNRELIEF is the fifth first place INMA
Award we have received in the last 22 years.
