Towards
Catastrophe
“My feet tremble, the earth shakes, my
satchel
slips away from my hand, the sky
beckons. Shall
I go alone… Mother?”

In December last year, DAWN launched a public
awareness campaign on behalf of DAWNRELIEF, to communicate
the voices of Behram, Khadija and Baby Asghar, and to help
convey, to over half a million DAWN readers, the devastation
faced by the four million survivors of Black Saturday.
As part of a deliberately focused approach, DAWNRELIEF
adopted a cluster of five villages in Hattian Tehsil, Azad
Kashmir, that was amongst the worst hit areas by Black Saturday.
Today, thanks to you – the readers of DAWN – DAWNRELIEF has
successfully facilitated the survival, well-being and
dignity of approximately eight thousand residents in our
tent villages in the Upper Jhelum Valley.
This spring, DAWNRELIEF has additionally initiated the task
of setting up permanent vocational centres, schools,
hospitals, community centres, water supply systems,
irrigation channels and homes. We are
committed to helping the survivors of Black Saturday leave
their fears and tragedies behind them, and to enabling them
to embark upon a new life.
