Hyderabad: Five injured following lawmaker’s killing in Karachi

HYDERABAD: Five people received bullet injuries and a government vehicle was partially burnt in separate incidents of violence Friday that erupted in Hyderabad following the assassination of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s legislator Sajid Qureshi in Karachi.

According to medico-legal section of Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) city branch, two bangle traders – both brothers – from Mardan were hit by stray bullets in Faqir Ka Pir area as they were visiting the area for their business. They are identified as Karwanullah and Kenanullah. They were shifted to LUH city branch.

Muzamil and Asif received bullet injuries in Paretabad area while one Shahid sustained bullet wounds in Makrani. They were also shifted to LUH city branch and are reported to be out of danger.

Miscreants tried to burn a government jeep of an executive engineer of Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) in Effendi Town area. People of the area extinguished the fire. The vehicle which was parked outside his resident was, however, partially burnt.

Violence broke out soon after news of assassination of MQM legislator, Sajid Qureshi was televised. Unidentified armed persons resorted to heavy aerial firing in different parts of the city and Latifabad. Miscreants raised barricades on roads and lit bonfires. They threw pieces of stones, bricks and other garbage on the roads to block flow of traffic. People had to make a detour while visiting different area.

Rangers and police officials were patrolling the area. They were also seen clearing or removing barricades from main roads. Miscreants burnt shuttering materials of some under construction buildings on roads to close it for traffic. No arrests were made.

Soon after incidents of aerial firing, all those areas which remain usually opened were closed.

Vendors disappeared from the streets and roads. Filling stations were also closed. Windowpanes of some vehicles were also smashed in different parts of the city. While roads wore a desert look and youths used the opportunity to play cricket.
