LAHORE, July 20: PPP leader Senator Aitzaz Ahsan has asked the PML-N to support Senator Raza Rabbani if it faces problems in finalising a nominee for the president’s slot.

“The government can support our nominee, Raza Rabbani, if it is facing problems in finalising its candidate, making him a joint candidate,” Aitzaz suggested at a press conference here on Saturday.

He said the government’s plea to change the presidential election schedule was “political” and not constitutional therefore, the court or the Election Commission could not change it. He said the PPP had nominated an honest and non-controversial person for the slot and other opposition parties and PM Nawaz Sharif should support him.

Aitzaz said if the government failed to have consultation on the appointment of the NAB chairman it could go to the Supreme Court.

“Deedar Shah and Fasih Bokhari were removed as NAB chairmen on the objection of then opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan. We’ll see if Khurshid Shah’s objection is given the same weight,” he added.

The PPP leader said his party had decided not to turn to the Supreme Court in any case until December when Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was due to retire.
