LAHORE: Police arrested on Friday a former federal minister belonging to the PML-Q, Liaquat Abbas Bhatti, shortly after recovering from his Johar Town residence a 14-year-old housemaid allegedly tortured and chained along with her younger sister and brother.
Police raided the place after receiving a tip about the illegal confinement of Shahida, her sister Zubaida and seven-year-old brother Irfan.
Shahida was immediately sent to the Jinnah Hospital for medical examination as she had swollen legs and arms and torture marks suffered during ‘months-long’ detention in chains.
A doctor said she was suffering multiple health conditions, including anaemia, because of remaining in such a condition. Zubaida had a severe wrist fracture.
The doctors suggested hat the three siblings be admitted to the hospital.
Shahida told Dawn in the hospital that she had been confined by Mr Bhatti because of a Rs400,000 loan her father had taken from him.
She alleged that Mr Bhatti had reduced her salary, as well as those of there siblings after their father obtained the loan.
Liaquat’s driver Wajid and two other employees tortured me when I refused to work at the new salary.
However, the children’s father Ashiq Ali, of Kot Noor Shah, Sheikhupura, said he had not barrowed money from the landlord, alleging that his children had been illegally confined by Mr Bhatti for bonded labour.
He came to Lahore when Johar Town police informed him about the recovery of his children. Police denied media access to the arrested former MNA due to legal complications.
Saddar Division SP (Operations) Jehanzeb quoted Liaquat Bhatti as claiming that he had not detained the children for forced labour.
“Actually my driver is responsible for the illegal confinement of the children. He kept them in the servant quarter over some issues,” he was reported to have said.
The official said police had not recorded any allegation about the loan during investigation.
He said Shahida was in chains when the children were recovered and they had torture marks on their bodies.
Police registered a case against Liaquat Bhatti and his driver Wajid under sections 354, 342 and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

A few years ago the sister of a Prime Minister killed a child maid who broke a glass in her house. The case was hushed. Glass was worth more than a life.

Mr Bhatti has influenced the Police as it is common in Pakistan. The society has gone to such a horrible conditions that now we do not care for our kids who remained in such a condition for so long. Mr. Bhatti should be behind bars and there should be no mercy from any forum of the society. Human Right Groups should not keep mum at this issue, we would like to see their uproar so that this guy get exemplary punishment so that no body else should dare thinking to do such a nasty act with human fellows. I would also request the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice of such a situation and send Mr. Bhatti behind bars even if it was done by his driver. We need society cleansing.

Make an example of him, give him public punishment - how dare he employ children as labour and then denounces that he "did not know" anything about them being chained. So he "knew" that the driver had chained them, why did he not take action against the driver and hand him over to Police before ?

This ex-Minister admittedly knew what was going on in the servants quarter, and clearly wastherefore at least accessory after the fact. He must be given full sentence due under the law for kidnapping three minors as he being a law minister knew what he was in for if he was caught, and there can be no mitigating circumstances. To call him an animal is an insult to animals.

how dare they do to a fellow human, loan or no loan. the minister can not absolve himself in any way or form from the crime, as he should be aware of what is going on in his house compound, let alone his country.. salute to the police for not letting this fall thru the system..

The ground is being laid to release this monster. He claims that is knows nothing and his driver is responsible. Earlier his wife said that she was not responsible. Bottom line: This is his house and this is his property. Funny thing is that the Dawn News Runs a program called "RAID," which is not real but staged drama, however, in that program the anchor acts big time moral and ethical guy who goes around and exposes wrongs. The police allow this Dawn News guy to photograph and film real crimes. What is different here? Because the accused is a powerful man. So, Bhatti man has more rights than a common person. My predication, nothing will happen. There will be a settlement between the parties. PML-N will not want a war with PML-Q. What we reading and listening is Drama.

Simple: we are in Pakistan. In our country being criminal minded is not essential to become a minister, but it helps a lot. Send him to prison for normal criminals. I have seen influencial people in jail enjoying all the facilities of their rich environment. Also this should be changed.

It reminds me of the daughter of Sharif brothers who was angry over a servant did not open the bakery for her. So later on the police, her husband, and others beat the Hell out of a poor Young man who was sweeping the floors of the bakery. Such attitude from someone in posh designer Lawn, Mobile and even hijab did not make her more decent. Politicians thinks PK and its poor ppl are their slaves.

Similar incident happened in US and the culprits were sentenced to life imprisonment. Police should not only involve driver and two others but also all household who were they were kept.

Pushing the blame to driver does not relieve Mr. Bhatti of his responsibility that something was going on under his roof. If he cannot detect the wrong doings withing his own house, then a minister has no right to claim guardianship of his constituency. Agree with Armagan's statement 100%

Unfortunately in a country where people are valued on their wealth rather than their humanity, & when their religion tells them to help the poor, & it says it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich to go to heaven, also to have complete obedience to a deity (god) - such a morality is wholly opposed to the norms & practices in pak society. Child labour or slavery is not just accepted but is extolled in this society, it has little to offer. - where religious leaders are more interested in politics or making money instead of teaching humanity, & whenever or wherever this type of mullas & their religion manifests itself in the public arena as a phenomenon, it is the most satanic of all. - If we are to have any respect in the world then Pakistani society desperately need to abolish this form of slavery

Every politician, minister , Judge, Police officer, Military officer and rascal in Pakistan should think that those three innocent children were his own son and daughters . When they think that , May be they will feel the pain . But then again , many rascals torture their own daughters .How do we start the betterment of a fanatic Islamic society. We have to find a way .

Instead, the poor kids and his father will be tortured and pressurised to change their statements! The driver may be arrested but just for a little while and we will all forget it in less than a week :)

Such people should be given severe punishment to convey a simple message to all those involved in illegal activities. Legal aid should be provided to these poor and uneducated people to ensure that such criminals cannot escape because of their influence and should be given maximum punishment under the law.

Unfortunate, the politicians are basically dependent on poor people as Sanjaya Baru says that poor people are the bread and butter of the politicians, they can not do without them. But this does not mean that poor will not come out of this false consciousness, they should fight with these big fishes and free themselves from the chains. Start fight and God will help you.

How sad it is..that in Pakistan even ladies of high society and position, have no sympathy for a girl of 14!!! Wish someone could just for a day do this kind of a thing to their daughters..and see what their reaction would be. Alas..they have no fear of Allah.

Soon feudal lords who are MNAs/MPAs of various political parties will unite against this arrest and force the government to release their comrade. Feudalism and feudalistic mindset has formed very strong grip in Pakistani culture and politics.

I do not understand what the noise is all about. Kidnapping, bonded labour, private jails of land lords, blatant corrupt practices of the now born again clean people who are the people's choice to lead the country- are the normal life style of the pakistani political class. The pakistani political leadership for most of the country history have been goons, thieves and such. 99% of them are this class of people, not fogetting illeterate numbskulls. Have you ever heard of the soldier leadership doing such activities?. Yes, they have become greedy and steal money- a few oftyem. But the majority are still clean!. Every day I pray for soldier to come back so that I can lead a relatively peaceful life.

Another example of rich man world where no one is human beside them selves and their so called loved ones. I am sure not a tiny dead leaf moves with out the master of the house knowledge, so this statement that the X minister was not aware of these atrocities unacceptable.

With the reference to this news we must demand from Government of the Punjab to immediately put a ban on Child Domestic Labour by including this in the list of banned occupation under the Employment of Children (Amendment) Act 2011. Child Domestic labour is contemporary form of Slavery and all must raise voices against this

We must ask Government of the Punjab to include Child Domestic Labour, which is a contemporary form of Slaver in the list of banned occupations under "The Employment of Children (Amendment) Act 2011, to save the future of thousands of Children involved in Domestic Child Labour.

You have summed it up beautifully. This guy has done a terrible crime and should be punished alongwith everyone involved, but would that fix the problem in general. I guess no, its people like us who give so much power to these beasts, we vote for them, celebrate their victory like we have won a battle, defend them like they are sent from heaven. Thats the problem, we need to have the power to challenge everyone and anyone who is wrong. It all start from us, how many of us employ these young minors at our homes, may be not torture pgysically but we torture them mentally everyday without realizing what future holds for this kid if he/she keeps wasing our dishes or cleaning our floors while our kids go to schools, play games infront of them. Its nerve wrecking, we all need to take a charge against it, then wewould be able to eradicate this from our society. May Allah give us the hidaya. Ameen

The minister is an insult to humans and to the party he belongs to. It shows the moral standards and the criteria PMLQ has selected in choosing their party presentation.
His bestial behavior and deliberate cruelty is an ultimate tragedy. But the greater tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the minister but the silence over that by the good decent people
