PESHAWAR: An internal audit report of the Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD) Hayatabad Medical Complex has unearthed the misappropriation of millions of rupees, with the hospital revenue being pocketed by some officials instead of being deposited in the treasury.

The IKD officials have also confirmed that despite repeated notices, the concerned ‘officials’ have failed to deposit the amount and action is being initiated against them.

Director Institute of Institute of Kidney Diseases Dr Asif Malik, who is the Drawing and Dispersing Officer and in-charge of the IKD’s administrative and financial affairs, said that action has been initiated and would be completed according to rules and regulations.

“The official involved has been suspended while another two are likely to be suspended tomorrow,” Director IKD Dr Asif Malik told Dawn.com when approached for comments.

He said that the accused has admitted the crime in writing to the IKD Accounts Officer and action is being against them.

An official of the IKD in administrative department when contacted confirmed that an internal audit of the accounts conducted in June 2013 has shown that about Rs29.91 million rupees which were generated from daily services like operation charges, daily receipts, private rooms fee and other multiple services on payment has not been deposited in the treasury and were missing.

“We have detected that the senior auditor of the Accounts section Sehat Khan who was authorised officer to collect cash from the counter clerks had not deposited the amount in treasury and had been using it for personal business,” a senior officer Shahid Iqbal in the Accounts section who was part of the audit process confirmed to Dawn.com.

“Yes we have come to know that the amount has been missing and we have notified to the concerned official who is a senior auditor on deputation at the hospital, to deposit the outstanding by September 30th but he had deposited only Rs5,65,000 while the remaining more than 2.4m are still outstanding,” he said, adding “failing to deposit the amount till the deadline, the official has been transferred.

The administrative officer of the Kidney Center Mukaram Khan confirmed that Sehat Khan had admitted in writing to the authorities that an amount of Rs29.91 million hospital money which has been collected under various services heads have not been deposited in the treasury but he has promised to return the money.

Mukarram Khan also confirmed that an inquiry has been initiated against the concerned officials and action is being taken.

Health Minister Shaukat Yousafzai on contact said that any official involved in the misappropriation would be dealt with sternly and action would be taken against them

“No one would be spared, if even the director or any administrative head, is found involved in the IKD affairs, and this graft would be dealt with under the law,” Shaukat Yousafzai said.

Shaukat Yousafzai said that the mess in the health department is being cleaned and all those involved in any misappropriation would taken to task irrespective of their ranks and cadre.
