ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called a meeting Wednesday to discuss the overall situation of peace and security in the country during which a report on the violence that recently took place in Rawalpindi would also be presented, DawnNews reported.

The meeting, which will be held at the Prime Minister House would include Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, the interior secretary and the heads of law enforcement agencies.

During the meeting, Nisar will brief the prime minister on the Rawalpindi violence who would also be presented with an initial report of last week’s clash in the garrison city.

The meeting would also discuss measures adopted to ensure peace and improve security in the aftermath of last week’s violence.

On Nov 15, violence erupted in Rawalpindi after participants of an Ashura procession were harassed by students from a seminary in the city’s Raja bazaar area.

A clash followed between the two groups in which 10 people were killed and a number of shops and a seminary were set alight.

Following the clash, FIRs were registered in four police stations of Rawalpindi including Pir Wahai, City, Bani and Ganjmandi. Cases were registered against people who damaged public and private property.

Later on the same day, a curfew was imposed in the city and the army was called in to take control. The curfew was lifted early on Monday.

A judicial commission to probe the incident and a fact-finding committee was also constituted to asses the damage to property and businesses in the city.
