KARACHI: A local leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party was gunned down in a targeted attack in Orangi Town on Friday, officials said.

They added that Mujeeb Rehman, 50, left his residence in Mohammadpur, Qasba Colony, in a car and was on his way to his showroom at Pakhtun Chowk when armed men riding a motorcycle intercepted and attacked him near his office. He sustained two bullet wounds and was rushed to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where doctors pronounced him dead.

The police said a 9mm pistol was used in the attack.

“It was an act of targeted killing,” said SSP West Irfan Baloch.

The victim was president of the party’s PS-96 ward and owned a showroom of cars, he said.

The police officer said the modus operandi indicated involvement of militants in the targeted attack. However, he said, the PPP local leader had not received any threat or he did not convey it to police.

Body found

Another body was found off the Superhighway on Friday, police said.

Gadap City SHO Imtiaz Niazi said the body of around 40-year-old man was found on a road leading to a farmhouse, situated around a kilometre off the Superhighway.

Only a few days ago, three bodies of men had been found from the same area. The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Doctors said that the victim had been killed at least three days ago.

“The cause of death could not be ascertained immediately. There were no apparent sign of torture or other injuries on the body,” the police said. The victim clad in khaki shalwar kameez wore a long beard and appeared to be a Pakhtun, the SHO said.

The doctors reserved the autopsy report for chemical examination of body parts. The corpse was shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification, the police said.

Man found shot dead in Lyari

A young man was found shot dead in a Lyari area on Friday evening, police said.

They said that the trussed-up body also bore torture marks. It was found in a garbage dump in Hingorabad near Crown Cinema.

The Kalri police said that the body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Karachi where his identity could not be ascertained immediately.
