Protest against sexual harassment at Peshawar University

Meanwhile, students at the Peshawar University students took out a protest rally to condemn what they described as the alleged harassment of female students by teachers, demanding act ion against the harassers.

Some students resorted to violence, smashing the windowpanes and flower pots at the premises.

Activists of the Insaaf Students Federation and the Pakhtun students federation staged separate rallies to condemn the rising harassment on the premises by the faculty and the staff.

According to the protesting students, several female students had complained of being sexually harassed by the teachers.

Sumera Shams, the president of the women’s wing of the Insaf Students Federation (ISF), said there were reports of sexual harassment in various departments and claimed that some students had even left their studies for the same reason.

“The professors and teachers are forcing the female students for undue favours in return for better positions in examinations and a number of them have been even forced to quit,” she said.

She claimed that the ISF had directly interacted with some of the victims but due to fear of social stigma, the students were afraid to disclose their identities.

Tariq Afghan, president of the Pakhtun Students Federation on the campus, said an inquiry should be conducted and the culprits be punished.

Rasool Jan, the vice-chancellor of the university, said the campus administration had not received any complaint so far but was prepared to take action if any such complaint is lodged.

Akhtar Amin, the university spokesman, said that there were certain bylaws and if they receive any such complaint of any student, action would be taken according to the law against the harassers.
