KARACHI: A shopkeeper was killed and another injured in a suspected sectarian attack in Rizvia Society on Thursday night, while a suspected militant was shot dead by law-enforcement agencies in an ‘encounter’.

Officials said Ghulam Hussain Baqar was sitting at his shop near Hyderi Imambargah in Ali Basti at Golimar when pillion riders opened fire and fled, leaving him and another man, Ali Hussain, wounded.

The wounded were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where the shopkeeper died. Angry mob took away the body without allowing doctors to complete legal formalities, said a hospital official.

The incident triggered tension in the locality.

The victim, a father of three children, hailed from Azad Kashmir.

A suspected militant was shot dead in an alleged encounter jointly carried out by the police and Rangers in Ittehad Town area of the city.

Karachi West SSP Irfan Baloch said the law-enforcers conducted a targeted raid on a hideout of suspected militants, which ensued in an encounter, resulting in the killing of one suspect while others fled. One hand-grenade and Kalashnikov were seized, the officer added.

The suspect’s identity could not be ascertained immediately.

However, a spokesperson for the paramilitary force in a statement said that the raid was conducted on the hideout of a ‘banned organisation’ near Cottage Industry. The officer added the area had been cordoned off and the operation was ‘still in progress’.
