PESHAWAR: At least two people were killed and three other were injured on Monday when unidentified militants attacked a Nato convoy of trucks carrying military vehicles in the Jamrud tehsil of Khyber tribal region, officials claimed.

Political administration officials claimed that unknown gunmen opened fire at three Nato containers near Karkhano Market in Wazir Dhand area of Jamrud tehsil after which the containers were set ablaze.

According to eyewitnesses, there were 10-15 armed assailants.

The two deceased include drivers of the vehicle, officials said.

The security forces cordoned off the area.

Traffic has been suspended on main Pak-Afghan Highway as police took control of the area.

Khyber lie in the northwestern parts of Pakistan with Khyber being the country’s seven semi-autonomous tribal districts near the Afghan border, rife with homegrown insurgents and home to a number of militant organisations.

The tribal region of Khyber also links several agencies to each other, serving as a north-south route within the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

Moreover, the bulk of supplies and equipment required by foreign troops in Afghanistan is shipped through Khyber, although US troops increasingly use alternative routes through central Asia.
