LAHORE: Members of the Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) were among the seven people killed during a clash between PAT protesters and policemen in Lahore on Tuesday.
According to initial reports, one of the deceased PAT supporters is a 16-year-old. Two women have also reportedly been killed in the skirmish, but authorities have not yet identified the deceased.
The Chief Minister of Punjab has held a meeting regarding the incident and has been briefed on the situation.
The party claimed that 12 of its supporters were killed in the skirmish, however the figure has not yet been verified by authorities.
“We received seven dead bodies including two women. All of them had bullet wounds,” said Dr. Abdul Rauf, Medical Superintendent at the city's Jinnah Hospital.
“We also received 80 injured, 40 with bullet injuries and 40 with other wounds. Two injured are critical,” he said.
Muhammad Rizwan, another member of the medical staff, confirmed that the dead bodies had been received.
Abdul Jabbar, a senior police officer, told AFP the clashes began when police went to the office of Qadri's Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), meaning 'Pakistan People's Movement', in the city's Model Town suburb on Monday night.
“The PAT activists resisted the operations which caused clashes between the protesters and police,” he said.
“We went to the area again during the morning with additional force. The PAT activists pelted stones on policemen and our force used tear gas to disperse them. We managed to complete the operation and remove the barriers despite the resistance,” he added.
A spokesman for the PAT said up to 12 workers had been killed.
“They launched this operation to counter our peaceful movement and the 'green revolution' promised by Doctor Tahir ul Qadri,” he said.
“We pelted stones to resist direct firing by police over protesters. We have information that 12 of our workers have been killed,” he added.
On Twitter, PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri condemned the government for "harassing and killing" his party workers.
"The government, gripped by fear of my arrival, is harassing PAT workers," he posted, adding that it is an oppressive step taken by the government which would pave the way for promotion of terrorism.
"Several people have been martyred and they have entered the secretariat and my house," he said.
Straight shots were reportedly fired when elite force personnel showed up to disperse PAT supporters outside the Lahore residence of PAT chief Qadri. The police were attempting to remove barriers surrounding Qadri's residence when the clash erupted.
Supporters of PAT were being rounded up by the police and being taken to a nearby station in Model Town.
Earlier, 55 people had been arrested.

In fresh arrests, 12 more were detained. Supporters were reportedly hiding in the PAT secretariat.
As police baton-charged the protesters, they began to hurl rocks at them. Moreover, the elite force had been firing straight shots at the protesters. Moreover, injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.
Police personnel from at least 12 police stations had been called to control the clash.
There were almost 1,000 police personnel on the site of the protest, according to latest reports. Due to the blockage of roads, commuters were also facing trouble.
Earlier, several area residents had overnight protested outside Qadri’s house in the presence of a large contingent of police personnel.
The residents had been demanding the immediate removal of the barrier outside Qadri’s house in Model Town.
PAT members were sprayed with tear gas and whipped by police personnel during the clash.
Qadri condemned police action on PAT members calling it cowardly. He added that the government could not stop his arrival nor could they stop the revolution that his party would be bringing in the country.
Meanwhile, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain also condemned police action on PAT members and demanded instant clearance outside Qadri’s residence and moreover showed support for Dr Qadri by announcing the observance of a countrywide a day of mourning tomorrow.

A revolution, it may be, but within the limits of the constitution I hope... and if my understanding is correct, the constitution does not allow any individual to take up arms against a legitimate authority (o.e. the police or uniformed force) or for that matter, to take up arms for anything other than self defense. I find it quite disgusting that these individuals have no respect for authority or for that matter anyone else.
Mr. Qadri - you have no right to take up public space! It does not belong to you, it belongs to the public! Mr. Qadri, please bring a revolution, but begin at home (in this case quite literally). Begin at home, and accept that any change will require all people to be treated equally. Including your royal highness (Mr. Qadri) himself. Otherwise, you're only fooling yourself with this so called revolution, it is just a fight for you to be in power instead of those your rebel against. Just for the purpose of learning a little bit more, why not try reading about African history. You may learn a thing or two about things to do and things not to do!
Mr. Qadri forgive me... but this isn't a revolution! You have blind followers but true leadership educates and shows light... not their own photographs!

I am not a member or supporter of PAT but after watching the media coverage, I cannot belive what is happening. The High Court should take immediate notice of this brutality, the concetrned SP should be arrested and murder case should be filed against Shahbaz Sharif. The Sharif brothers are basically dictators and they have not learnt the lesson. What do they think? Are they the owners of Pakistan?

Such is the professionalism of our police and Punjab govt. Kill the agitated stone throwing protestor to destroy a family and make a hero out of a political non-entity (Qadri). Sending a 1000 'strong' policemen to control an un armed protest was an overkill and it just backfired.
There has to be a better way to tackle Qadri and the govt is just clueless... Where is the political experience they trumpeted before the elections?

In any real democracy forming demonstrations is a FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT of the People. Using the police to violently suppress demonstrations shows how the government does NOT care about the voice of the people.
This incident is a very shameful act and puts us in league with many other ruthless governments which condone policebrutality.
An inquiry should be made over the killing of 5 innocent civilians and these policeofficers should be brought to justice.

If its only the question of barriers then just go to clifton and see even a small police grade officer has barriers in front of his house. check the barriers in front of all the rulling elite. I do not understand why would police personnel with weapons and resources feel the need to shed blood. What was the sin of the 16 year old girl that she deserved death other than having a right to her opinions? Dr. Tahir - ul - Qadri is NOT responsible for the lives lost today. Everybody knew and knows what they are getting into by joining him including myself. They want a revolution JUST as much as he does. They could have run away but they chose to stand up for what they believed in and bravely yet peacefully defended themselves against the disgusting, brutal attacks of the police. He is going to Pakistan for a revolution and this time he is not coming back. If the police are the ones that murdered them then why not blame the police? Or the Government? The government is corrupt and things are getting worse and worse, terrorist attacks are increasing something needs to be done ASAP and the only person who is truly doing something is Tahir-ul-Qadri, what are we doing?

Well actually the police first attacked at night, on orders from the government to allegedly break down the barriers yet they ended up killing and injuring people. They are the ones who have used guns and tear gas. The police created the disturbance. In fact (and this was caught on camera) there was an injured police officer and some PAT members were offering to take him to hospital, even though it was the police who were attacking. They intruded on people whilst they were sleeping and beat people up, all the the PAT people had was sticks and stones which they were only using for defence, how are you justifying the police's actions yet criminalizing the innocent civilians' actions? The thing is, in incidents like that people turn to the police for help, but who could these people ask for help? The police?

@Mahmood ..Trying to sound educated and calm dos not change the facts on the ground..these people have bullet holes in them, yet they were not armed, whats the difference between a Palestinian kid throwing stones to the tyrants waving guns? The police acted brutally and Islam, which is the supreme rule ( or should be) in Pakistan gives you the right to pick arms if attacked in this nature..Qadri is better than the sharif brothers, thats more than enough for a man who has a brain to think and knowledge to reflect upon! This government has to go, or the masses will join TTP and then there will be something to worry about..You're ill informed and your views are stupid, hence the reason for Pakistan's crisis, the foolish trying to guide those who already know whats happening

Protests must be carried out within certain limits in observing the law and order situation. It is understandable that security forces (Police) shall retaliate, and the ones who try to impede the legal process of maintaining law and order situation. Mr. Qadri, should not play with the lives of the innocent and religious people of Pakistan.

After looking at some comments, it is clear that Nawaz Sharif also has a machinery making sure its support in Social media. While I am a strong supporter of democracy and I don't want military at any cost but this I hope is the beginning of the end for this government. PPP which in my personal opinion is far more corrupt, didn't stopped any peaceful protests including a blockade of Islamabad by TahirUlQadri.

I watched videos attached herewith very sadly. Gunfire, live bullets in response of stoning from unarmed protesters. I observed before this type of behaviour from Israeli forces against unarmed Palestinians. Down with Punjab police and Punjab government.

Unlike general perception, its not if Qadri is right or wrong. The way this situation has been dealt shows lack of control and training of Punjab Police. If CM can take credit for each and every development project in the province and personally wants to monitor health and control police, he should take responsibility for their failure too. This is worst form of democracy. Definitely calls for resignation from Law Minister at least!

What happened in Lahore is a very sad event and I wish Police would have not caused this law and order situation. Both government and the political parties must show discipline for the country. Country is passing through a very challenging time. No one should took power through ill means. We should use votes to settle our differences. And indeed the focus should be to make the voting system transparent. Pakistan Armed forces are facing law and order situation in the tribal region-this is not the time we want to see another front in the country.

The residents demanded the removal and therefore police were trying to remove the barricades when the clashes started.
Mr Qadri's followers apparently were resisting removal of barricades (and not the other way round).
Agreed with most posters- Mr. Qadri has no right to inconvenience the common masses/neighbors in the name of security. And the way their blind followers follow them- they could always show them the path to peace instead of making more aggravating comments.

As a Pakistani citizen who does not support PML N or PAT, this is disturbing. I blame both leaderships for craving more power. But most importantly, many of my fellow Pakistanis were injured or killed at the hands of Punjab Police. This is unacceptable. Finally we see how political parties have their goons, and their own police officers in powerful positions. I hope the nation learns from this and I pray for those who have perished. Seems like PML N is determined to dig their own grave.

In any such events, things go beyond ones control, there are so many unknowns and the consequences cannot be contained once one crosses the line. These women should not have been there to begin with, especially when they knew that the authorities were about to conduct such an operation. What were they thinking?

Anyone defending action of law enforcement authorities and Government can watch the videos recorded by several media and local residents and realize how wrong you are(if little bit sense of morality left in you). Even if there were barriers, people were trying protect the office and their home, action taken by the local authority is not justifiable. They murdered unarmed citizens. You can see a PML member destroyed vehicles under supervision of local Police - You can understand What a shameless murderer party PML is. This is true brutality of Government and law enforcement authorities.
All the comments against TMQ and in favor of government is either paid for comments or example of immorality.

Where was Qadari , PML Q when Zardari was plundering the pakistan and every next day we were listening the stories of c0rruption, injustice and inefficieny of Govt. In fact Qadari kept on enjoying foreign visit and PML Q was enjoyng the seat of Deputy PM and other perks.. For GOD sake these people will bring change to pakistan... there agenda is to grab power by sending this Govt home ...nothing else
