Police claim arresting suspects in Karsaz attack

KARACHI: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Usman Bajwa on Friday claimed to have arrested two members of banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) who were involved in the deadly 2007 Karsaz attack.

Speaking at a press conference at CID Office in Garden, he said that a target killer was also arrested and weapons were also recovered from the suspects’ possession during different targeted operations in the city.

He said that the accused have made important disclosures about the attack at Benazir Bhutto’s rally that took place on October 18, 2007and a suicide attack on Bilal Shaikh – an old confidant of PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

Bajwa said that accused were identified as Jamshed Khan alias Khutki and Mohammad Abid alias Abdullah of TTP and target killer, Junaid Zaidi.

The police recovered two 30-bore pistols and two hand grenades from their possession, the SSP further claimed. He said that the accused were arrested near Manzil petrol pump along the National Highway within the limits of Shah Latif police station.

The SSP said that detained accused were also involved in extortion, targeted killing and bomb blasts cases. He added that in a separate raid, one target killer was arrested who has confessed to have killed 20 people.

Police also claimed to have killed three suspected terrorists belonging to TTP in an encounter in Sohrab Goth area.

Speaking to media representatives, SSP Malir Rao Anwar said that a suicide bomber and a TTP commander, identified as Sultan were also killed in the shootout.

He said that heavy arms, detonators and a suicide vest were also recovered during the police action.


Attacks on police vehicles injure four cops in Karachi


At least four policemen were injured in two separate attacks on their vehicles in different areas of Karachi on Friday, DawnNews reported.

The first attack was carried out by unidentified miscreants near an Imambargah at Nipa, when they hurled a hand grenade inside a police mobile stationed at a flyover to provide security to the Imambargah.

Two police constables received injuries while the vehicle was badly burnt in the incident. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.

Nipa flyover was temporarily blocked for traffic after the incident as the law enforcement agencies launched a search operation in the area.

The second attack of the night took place at Nagan Chowrangi, where unknown gunmen opened fire at a Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) vehicle. Two policemen were injured in the incident and the attacker successfully fled the site.
