Kudos to DAWN for publishing this. It strikes me -- the first poster by HBL showing soldiers... appear to be straight from a "G.I.Joe" flick (i.e. American) esp the main soldier shown, and the one from United Bank shows what surely appears more as a Communist Guerilla in the mould of Che Guevara rather than what would have been regarded as a 'Proper Jihadist' ... little wonder that Pakistanis in general were not inspired that much to contribute to a war that they knew they would never win... and hence the 'denial mode' that persists till today.

No one wins a war, both side lose. Wars are started by politicians, run by bureaucrats, fought by soldiers, but the ones who suffer the most are civilians.
Even all the countries in Europe were fighting with each other, England, Spain and France had rivalry for 1000 years, Germany, Italy crushed rest of Europe mere 60 yrs back during World War II. But look at them today, all living prosperously, no need to have huge defence spending.
India and Pakistan were actually 1 nation for 5000 years, can we not forget 50 years are rivalry and live in prosperity. NO need for VISAs, no need for defence forces, we respect each others existence and values and live like Europe.
Please give it a serious thought.

I would like to appeal all inviduals to rise above religion and worry for Humanity.
If religion is meant to spread hatred , then it's wrong somewhere or the interpretation is wrong done by few despots or selfish people.
and this is true to all religions across the world.

East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) was thousands of miles away from the Centre of power in the west and the authorities should have been very careful in dealing with their eastern wing, when elections were held. When the Awami League won the elections, the party was not allowed to form the govt and the Bengali speaking Muslims were subject to torture of all kinds, resulting in an exodus of Bengali refugees into India. In fact, I still remember, a special extra stamp called "refugee stamp" of 5 paise was levied on every postal article to meet the extra financial burden on the Indian govt. The Indian govt had to intervene to solve a very difficult situation and did so eventually. Please remember India didn't attach the territory after spending a lot of money in the war, but quietly backed away handing over the country to the native Bengalis. India does not celebrate the day. I was a postgraduate student at the time and what I have recalled here are facts.

Shouldn't we be burying the ghosts of past and learn how to live in peace now?
FYI, 16-Dec has never been celebrated in India outside military circles - EVER. Did it ever occur to anyone that this is to ensure we don't rub the wounds (and encourage further enmity) with Pakistan? I hope people in Pakistan too move on, and get a chance to live in peace and progress.
1971 happened a generation ago or more! It's a new world today, where there's no need to live in hatred. I'd rather by happier working 14 hours a day trying to buy a big screen TV than be busy thinking about what happened some 40 years ago. Lets work hard to create better lives for ourselves, living in the past doesn't help.

Today, Pakistan is facing another big war and that is against home-grown and imported militancy. Dawn and rest media is full with similar vows as contained here in these ads. The word jehad as I understand is something sublime, only invoked when the religion is really in peril.
By continually using this word liberally and without moderation in the past few years it has lost its real import and now it has acquired a negative connotation, consequently a 'jehadi' today is looked at as somebody unwelcome even dangerous.
In the ads here, too, it has been used as a call to rally people, but its use is totally ironic since the armed forces in the Eastern wing of the country were not exactly following the tenets of Islam.

Jehad has nothing to do with war. Islam means peace. Bad things happen when religion is hijacked for political reasons.

The Indian Army had a chief in Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw ( a Parsi), who delegated the authority to run operations in the Eastern Front to Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora ( a Sikh) who was in turn aided by JFR Jacob ( an Indian Jew)....:):):)
If that is not a show case of secularism, I wonder what secularism is?:)
In Dhaka, the Pakistani Army had 30,000 troops as against 3000 Indian paratroopers surrounding it, and if the top brass had decided to fight on, they could have fought for at least next three weeks?
Ah,well, just recollecting FACTS!:):)

@Abdul Shafiqullah great Mr. Abdul... Really appreciate your views... We must fight common enemy not only terrorism but also poverty, climate change, unequal opportunity, improper wealth sharing etc.. Etc... Why south as is too cannot become another Europe? Just forget the religion or keep it with in house.... That's all for us to become more and more happier...

This all began when a greedy person without authority and people's vote become the ruler of Pakistan in October 1958.Due to his lust for power and family rule and bad governance he disfigured Pakistan.A lesson to learn and only way to move forward and progress is justice, merit, localisation, rights, truth, decentralisation and good governance.

But I thought 'jehad' was some kind of 'inner struggle' not a war of killing and bloodshed like the terrorists say it is....or is it that the terrorists are right?
